I have narrowed my first pistol purchase down to either a Glock 17 or S&W M+P

I will be going to my local gun shop to handle both guns tomorrow and was wondering about pricing on each of them. I checked out some of the dealers on the forum but I couldn't find any in stock.

The glock 17 OD is $699 at this dealer locally which seems a bit high but I could be wrong.

I don't see a price on the M+P ... both guns are chambered in 9 mm

I'd love to get a sig as my first gun but I don't know if it's in the cards $ right now.

That's not a bad price. Seems pretty fair to me. I was looking at a Glock 22 in OD and it seems they go anywhere from $675 and up. Being able to hold it and feel it before buying it is worth the extra couple bucks in my opinion. If you buy the Glock, Try and get them to throw in a couple boxes of ammo. If they care about the customer, they will do it and you will come up on top.

If you can find one of the norinco nock-off's, sig model. It will be well worth it for a first gun. That way you can shoot the crap out of it and don't have to worry about screwing up an expensive handgun. Although Glock's are well built they do require lotz of training to shoot properly and from what I have noticed, polymer framed handgun's require slightly different style of shooting compared to the sig metal framed shooting.

Thanks for the norc suggestion it's actually a very good point and I hadn't seriously considered it. I've been hesitant to buy a norc only because of resale value and some people do look down on them but have you shot the sig clone by norc is it a decent gun?

decent price.....I just bought a new G22 RTF for 799 plus GST. Adjustable sight model.....699 seems fair enough for a new Plastic Fantastic.....go for it.

My M&P9 has been out of service because of a broken striker since August 11th.

The warranty station in Canada does not have any replacement strikers, and has said that obtaining a replacement striker might take "months", and Smith & Wesson has agreed to sell me a replacement striker - twice - but neither order #1 nor the follow-up order #2 has been delivered yet. I'm not holding my breath, and neither is the warranty station.

If you do a search on M&P9 broken striker you'll see that this experience is not isolated.

This is an issue that you should take under consideration prior to the purchase of any M&P9.

(E.G.: If you want to buy an M&P9, maybe you should buy two instead.)

Late entry:

M.D. Charlton replaced the broken striker and returned the pistol (Oct.2nd).

Spare strikers have arrived also (from Smith & Wesson, Brownells, and M.D. Charlton).

They pop up on the EE a lot. I would be patient! They go for about 550 used and that is with no tax and usually shipping included. Pretty big savings, you almost save enough to buy a norc!

Thanks newshot I appreciate the info and yes that is a pretty substantial savings. I'm going to hold both of the guns today to see which one feels better, I will admit when I shot a glock 22 last weekend I liked the trigger even if all of my shots were low and to the left (practice will fix that I'm sure)

That's funny because our local range's main safety officer trains the police students to shooting and they all shoot low and to the left.

Last one I saw wasn't bad tho, he shot thight groups at the end of the training.

This was my first time firing a handgun to be fair so I'm sure it was more me than the glock but I do feel slightly better that after practice/training I could be more accurate. I actually held 3 guns today the S&W MP9, Glock 17 and Steyr M9-A1. I actually loved the way the Steyr felt in my hand and I plan to order one as my first gun once my RPAL arrives. I will get the MP9 eventually I'm sure as it was a very close second, the glock was actually a distant third but still a good gun.

Dude, I offered you one, and the offer still stands, you'll have it in less than a week.

Thank you again, enefgee.

Thank you again for the offer. Like I told you, the pistol is with M.D. Charlton in B.C., and I am not stuck for a pistol. Your offer was very generous. Why then - you might wonder - did I post in this thread?

Any prospective buyer should be aware of this unresolved striker issue and S&W's handling of the replacement parts supply. It should be very relevant to the purchase decision, in my opinion.

Although I haven't fired too many rounds through my M&P yet I have not had a problem with it. I've been told that they're into their 3rd generation of production and Smith and Wesson have corrected the striker problem they've been having.

i agree, S&W is probably scrambling for the thousands of m&p 40's and 9's they mass produced and sold to Law enforcement in the states and canada

I was just looking at the Glock 17 and M&P9 a couple weeks ago. The local shop had both in stock and in the $700 price range. If I remember correctly the G17 was $670 and the M&P9 was $690.
I've only shot the G17 before but the M&P9 felt better in my hands.

DUDE THAT'S YOUR PROBLEM RIGHT THERE!
M.D. Charlton kept my crimson trace laser grips for "repairs" for over a year and never sent it in. I must have called M.D. Charlton's manger 30 plus times waiting for a response. So if it wasn't for me contacting crimson trace directly to get my replacment grips I would have never got them. Then 3 months after crimson trace sent it to me (free of charge) M.D. Charlton decieded to call me and say that they will need me to come in and sign an end user agreement. I laughed at those @$$h@t$ and told them that a couple of months before they already sent me the replacement. I got of the phone with them and called crimson trace and told them about this conversation I had with M.D. Charlton. Less than two hours later I get a phone call from there manager of M.D. Charlton saying sorry and that they would take step's to never allow this to happen again. I laughed and said don't worry cause I never have anything to do with your company again. Plus if anyone ask's me about your company I would make sure to tell them this story.

That M&P is overpriced, they go in the 500-something. Can't be more than a Glock.
