I was considering getting an oversized safety on a couple of my 870's. Would you guys suggest getting a gunsmith to install them? Is it hard?

... Easy to "do it yourself"... Instructions usually supplied are easy to follow, downside, they do stick out a little more, but still a worthwhile addition . .... A brightly colored magazine follower/plug is another worthwhile addition. .... David K :)

Do your guns have the standard 870 safety or the J-lock?

For standard safety, knock out the two pins that hold the trigger assembly in the receiver and remove it.

Directly above the safety on the trigger assembly you will see a small (about 3/32") pin running horizontally. Use a punch to push this pin out. This pin retains the detent ball and spring for the safety.

You will find the vertical hole for them above the pin. Hold your finger over the hole or you may be looking for the spring. Once the pin is out, remove the spring and detent ball.

The safety should now be able to be removed. Install the new safety. Replace the detent ball, the spring, push the spring down and reinsert the cross pin over top the spring.

If you are replacing a J-lock you will likely need a replacement spring and ball detent. Otherwise the procedure is the same.

Are there any potential issues with putting an oversized safety on a Norinco? All the parts are theoretically interchangeable, but I have found that is not always 100% true.

I did it on a grizzly with no problems...................
But, hey I also did it on a j-lock with out replacing any parts..........What a hack I am...................

To be fair the Grizz seems to be compatible with everything I have tried. That is not the case with the HP-9 and the like.

really? I think(know) they are made in the same factory in fact the griz sometimes show up in hp-9 boxes............ I know that the threads on the mag. tubes can be different but the trigger group should be the same?!?!?!

As stated both must have up grades for the rem 870 we have both in stock.
The follower if more important then the safety.
