Hi all, I am wondering if someone could measure their action screw on their Ruger 10/22 for me. I am getting a replacement and need to know the length. I already know that the thread is #12-24 tpi, I just need to know the length of it, EXCLUDING the head. Does anyone know or can someone take theirs out and measure it please?

these size of machine screw aren't terribly common, you can't just go down to home hardware and get one...

last time i looked, they'd have to come from state side.

The #12-24 is a real pain in the butt to find here in Canada. I need 1/2" long fully threaded for my Thompson kits and I bought the last 60 pieces in Canada that I could find from Fastenal and nobody else I can find carries them.

If anyone has a source, I would very much appreciate knowing about it.

Regards
John

Yeah I went to Home Depot looking for one and they had nothing.

If you can find the V block screws they are the same thread but just longer.

Thanks everyone, Im headed to Fastenal right now, and if I come up empty handed there, Ill be off to the Bolt Supply Warehouse, Ill find one... I hope.

You would think that a company with the name Bolt Supply Warehouse should have several of them in stock.

What they had in at Home Depot was 10-24 then it went to 1/4-24.

Well I just got back from checking Fastenal and The Bolt Supply Warehouse. I had no luck at either. They all seem to skip over #12 for some reason. It all goes from #10 to 1/4''. They had all kinds of finishes and heads at the bolt supply house but nothing in the right shank diameter. Fastenal said they might be able to get some in but it may be a while. I guess Ill have to break down and order one from one of the suggested locations. I guess this is one of those supply/demand things. I simply do not enjoy the idea of paying $5 for a bolt that had I been able to find it at either of those stores, would have been no more than $0.70

Why on earth did Ruger use such an oddball size?

Dunno why Ruger chose it. Maybe to limit sources of replacements to their own supply chain, perhaps. It happens.

The number sizes don't see huge use once you get larger than a #10. Apparently the #12 and #14 sizes get used a fair bit on rack mounted hardware, TV,Audio, and Server racks kind of stuff.

To the same result, 3/16 inch size is in the standards, but has pretty much disappeared, replaced in common usage by the 10 size machine screw threads.

Cheers
Trev

Are you suggesting that with a drill bit and 1/4'' tap that you could rethread your reciever? I was thinking about this option just to avoid having this issue again if I ever mess up the screw. The only problem is that I will likely spend more on tooling than I need to and thus make it more economical to buy the stinking screw and be done with it. I would also be a little nervous to mess up threading the new hole in my reciever

Maybe I will instruct the staff at Regina Fastenal to get a few from the winnipeg store, as "UPNORTH" has indicated they have some in stock there.

when ruger started making 10/22s all those years ago, i'm sure the 12x24 was a common screw. unfourtuantly this size has faded into obscurity.

ruger has continued using this size, likely simply because thats the size they've always used.
