Does anyone know what type of finish the Russian SKS's use on the stock? Is it the orange shellac or something totally different?

Thanks

SKS Laminate Stock Finiish

My 1951 refurbed Tula had a shellac finish. The first time out with it this spring, my bug juice made it sticky. So... I removed it and applied two coats of varnish. Problem solved.

Wow bug juice made it sticky "good to know" I guess the russians dont have a Mil-spec standard.

I wonder if I could kill two birds with one stone and finish the stock in deet. :D

My M91/30 was finished using amber shellac and was hoping to get the right shade the first time. From what I can see from google images the one they use is either a orange or clear shellac.

Thanks for the responses,
Brent

Louthepou has posted somewhere the proper colour and number, I think it was amber rather than orange, but don't quote me. A PM to him would no doubt get you the correct answer. Lee Valley Tools has shelac.

Personally I have been able to repair patches of missing shelac by just using a brush with alcohol to disolve some of the shelac around the missing bit and "stretch" it over the bad bit.

Great idea Paul. Thanks!
