Wondered if you guys could provide any ideas on this.

I was working late one night and was chatting with one of my co workers who overheard my call regarding going to the range on the wekend. He got into a story about how growing up in China he would see in Western movies deer or moose antlers on peoples walls.

He mentioned that it had always been a dream of his to have antlers on his wall and asked if I knew where he could find some.

I don't hunt, due to lack of time, and I didn't even know if it is legal to buy or sell them.

Would any of you if there is any legal way he could purchase them?

I don't believe they are a controlled product. Someone with a bit more knowledge might confirm for me but I think you can just buy them from anyone. Post an ad in the EE (other items for sale) looking for antlers and you should have plenty of responses. Is he looking for loose antlers (ie: sheds) or an attached pair on skull (ie: a european mount) or a full taxidermy quality mount?

Actually they MIGHT be classified as such even though they technically arent. On another forum a guy in Ontario was approached by Conservation or whatever and got into some "heat" because he sold a set of moose antlers at his garage sale and asked to see some permit or something like that. I'll see if I can dig up the thread.

there's an easy way to get these- get the ones the outdoor stores use for rattling, ( they're made of plastic) - you can even get a whole head mount if you want- talk to your taxidermist- get it painted and mounted- just like fake boobs-

I noticed on the Cabelas US site, that they sell full shoulder mounts with real antlers.
Prices were very good(approx. $800 for a 160 B&C deer)...considering that mounting costs alone here are $4-500. :)
There were other mounts too, sheep, speedgoat, moose?, caribou...but pick-up in store ONLY.
Not sure on import regs or legalities though.

in ontario, you may sell one set of cast-off antlers, and one set of cut-off antlers, per year.

im pretty sure about that, but its in the hunting regs, if anyone wants to check.

IN BC IT IS UNLAWFUL:

to traffic in dead wildlife or a part of wildlife except when the wildlife was lawfully killed in BC during an open season under the Wildlife Act or lawfully brought into BC, or when trafficking in cast antlers or when the wildlife or part of wildlife has been processed into a product that no longer resembles the original wildlife or part.

So it's illegal to sell Cast Antlers and you can only sell antlers that have come off an animal you hunted legally.

Doesn't say how many sets you can sell though per year if there is a limit.

See, I read this that its illegal if you do any other than the four options above.

There are tons of companies in Canada who sell anters/hides/whatever so just have your buddy do a google search. They will know exactly what the laws are too! ;)

It just says "Legally shot in BC." Doesn't say "you" have to have shot them. Go ahead and sell, shed or from dead animal, legally shot.

From my experience in BC and ON - If the antlers are dropped, you can buy and sell them. If they are from a shot animal, no.

This is correct in Ontario with the further proviso that if a person wishes to buy or sell more than one set of dropped antlers a dealers licence must be acquired.

Has no none ever heard the story of Bob The Moose?
