Purchasing lee enfield

I guy I work with is looking to sell a couple lee enfields.
#5 Jungle Carbine (fazakarly)
#4 longbranch
He claims that both are in good condition, non-bubbad, full wood and all numbers match.

My questions is:

What is the aproximate value of these rifles. If what he says is true?
Also what are the best websites to go to to find out more about these rifles?
Where will alll the serial numbers be located?

thanks,

Depends on all the details. The No5 can be $300-500 depending on your interpretation of 'good' condition, I typically find.

The No4 Longbranch, again depends on your interpretation of 'good' quality. I paid $650 for mine, all matching in excellent condition.

Serial numbers will be located on the bolt handle, the left side under the safety catch and above the trigger guard where the stock meets the receiver, and in some cases on the bottom of the magazine. Mine has the serial number there, but I understand that's not always the case.

Look for serial numbers on the left side of the butt socket, on the mag (sometimes no number present), bolt handle; sometimes on the forend (my No5 has it, not sure about the No4?)

yes Lou is correct on serial numbers.

Should be on the wood stock located near the muzzle on the bottom of the stock.

and numbers on the reciever and barrel. Reciever is normally on the left side of the wrist (No4) but may be on the left side of the reciever and No5 is normally on the receiver.

Mags may or may not have serial numbers, better chance of that on the No5 then No4

Bolt handle on the back should match the reciever.

Approximate value is 350 to 450 for both in good to very good condition. No.5 's have the markings on the bolt handle and left reciever side. No.4's are either the same, or have thier reciever markings on the bottom of the handguard, under the bolt handle.
The outer look of the No.5 can be very misleading. I bought mine for 325 and the wood is in ok condition, but the bore is pristine. Not a pit, extremely shiny bore and excellent rifling. I've fired around 100 rounds down it now and still looks good.

both should be in the $350-$450 range

Unless the Longbranch is a post war build then it could go higher

Wondering if you could comment also on why it would be higher?

I just paid $370 for my No.4 mk2 all numbers matching. Bought it at a gun show and it seam to me the guy selling it didn't even know what kind of gun it was. It could of been an estate sale or something similar.

A Longbranch is a Canadian-made Lee Enfield, and your Mk2 is not - so for Canadians this corresponds to a higher price.

Depending on year of manufacture, price will also vary because production numbers vary also from year to year.

Depends on what you want it for. No4 for target work, a No5 for the collection, and cause its neat looking. However the No5, because it's lighter, is going to have more recoil, (Newtons Third law of motion).

Oh, one other thing, Jungle carbine is the name the surplus dealers hung on it. the true nomenclature is Rifle. No5 Mk1.

Reminded me of our "gift" to the gun banners. Dealers calling every semi-auto military rifle an "Assault rifle" to generate sales.
