Well I picked up this freshy barreled AV action Sako from a fellow CGN'r on Saturday & thought I'd post a picture or 2.

This rifle was supposed to be for my Dad, but now after getting it all back together & the barrel channel fitting properly, I am not so sure I want to give it to him anymore?

Here are all the details:

Sako AV Magnum action
S/S Matte finish 7mm Rem Mag Sako profiled Ted Gaillard barrel finished @ 24 1/4" with recessed crown.
Sako Hunter Wood stock @ 13.5 LOP. I do have a McMillan in the closet I am considering putting on instead?
Trigger set to 3lbs.
After Market detachable 3+1 round magazine.
Leupold rings & mounts.
Leupold Vari-X III 3.5x10x40mm gloss duplex.

Reloading begins tomorrow. 140gr Nosler pills to start with.

This rifle came to me as a 22" 7mm when I got it. It shot fine but had a bulge in the barrel about half way down the pipe. Copper fouling was terrible, so I opted for one of Ted's fine replacements.

Range Report to follow.

:)

That is forsure one beautiful rifle, keep it, you can always give it to him in a few years when your done with it!

Yeah I know, only problem is I sold his T3 on him so I guess I should replace it.
Besides I have a better one coming for myself hopefully by mid Oct just in time to put it to paper & go hunting ;)

Now that's a pretty rifle! If it was me I would put the McMillan on it for hunting and keep the wood for off season shooting and admiring. Keep the rifle and you will appreciate it, give it to your dad and he will appreciate both you and it.

very nice:D....I like those bases and rings...best ever on a Sako...better than the ugly and heavy Opti-Loks.....I feel another Sako coming on...shoulda kept all of the dozen or so that I've owned over the years.:)

Re: the 7mm Rem Mag cartridge.....one of the best IMHO

On Saturday I shot two 7mm STW's and a 7mm Rem Mag....there's virtually no difference in velocity with 160 Accubonds.....from 24" barrels the STW went an average of 2995fps for 5 rounds with 75.5 grs of Rel22....the 7mm Rem Mag went an average of 2970 for 5 rounds with 60 grs of IMR4350....however the 26" STW is faster with the 160 Accubond load averaging 3130fps....FWIW...your mileage may vary...

Whoa... you sold his rifle on him?

Long story short, when the new PAL system came out, Dad got his PAL but decided anything new he wanted to register in my name. Guess he thought he was gonna kick the bucket (LOL)!

I actually gave him that T3 for Christmas a few years back. One weekend earlier this year I asked him if he'd be upset if I sold the rifle on him because I had a buyer for it. I told him I'd replace it with something better. He said No problem. He has always admired my Sako's anyways.

That's why his T3 went down the road. I think this is much better. Besides now when he kicks the bucket (hopefully many many years from now) I have another Sako in the closet. :)

That's what the plan is. After test fitting the McMillan with the drop mag, we have a bit of work to get it to fit correctly so it is not just a simple bedding job. We need to get the floor plate & receiver spaced the proper distance from each other so the magazine fits correctly. That won't happen for a couple of weeks yet. :)

The wood stock fits perfectly. Just had to relieve the barrel channel a bit. :)

Yeah, I'd say a T3 for a Sako's a good trade. I think your Dad's going to be happy as h3ll with that rifle.

Beautiful job and fine rifle. I am very partial to older Sakos as well. The older ones are finished very nicely compared to the new Sako stuff. Own six of them from 338WM down the line to 222 Rem. Re barreled some with Gaillards. Don't much care for the detachable mags though...just my preference.

Nice job....

Not a fan of the Magazine myself either, but Dad is, the nice thing is when he hangs it up down the road I have the floorplate waiting that will promptly go back on. For now it works though. :)
