Good evening CGNers. Im writing a speech on the hunt of the harp seal. The difficult part is that it is being directed at a bunch of immature emmotional 15-16 year old teenagers. I am of course staying the course of hard facts and have a page of quotes by people like jacques cousteau. The problem im having is...im not the greatest writer for convincing people. A little help on how i word this speech would be greatly appreciated:) You could be changing, inderrectly, the minds of our future citizens.
my facts are pulled from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seal_hunting
http://www.sealsandsealing.net/quotes.php
etc
Thank you

The only people that present strong arguements when debating the seal fishery are usually vegans... anyone who wears or uses any animal product, be it eggs or leather, can easily be debated.

Good luck

Seals provide a good photo opp, nothing more. This is usually why you see most poses are with a "whitecoat" which are not hunted.

As for the hunt, the inhumanity/humanity of it... the club looks bad, and if used incorrectly can make for some bad footage. The club is no longer used in Canada. Bullets are used, and were used over 90% even before they said no more clubbing. Becasue of the pelts head shots are preferred.

Before you hive your speech, take a quick survey of the room. Notice who's wearing what, who has a leather bag, leather boots, etc etc..

Don't get into petty squabbles, always refer to the notes/facts and take the higher ground,..you look smarter in the end..

Hitting something in the head is actually a very humane way to kill it. What is the difference between that and the bolt guns so many kill and chill plants used.

We live in a sanitized world where too many people put up blinders to reality. That grocery store beef you eat is not killed humanely, it is electrocuted and stunned and then it bleeds out while it's heart is still pumping. Almost all never wake up, some do and by the time they come to are almost completely skinned.

But we ignore these things, because it means less blood on our cellophane plate in the store.

The inhuman arguments are all based on ignorance, focus on shooting holes in them

The problem with the club, I found, was the image and the association of "club and cavemen" ... etc.

To most, the image of an animal being struck in the head with a club and then flopping about is not appealing,...humane or non humane, falls by the wayside for the ignorant.

The seal hunt happens in public, not behind the barn door or the factory gate. Even if the club is 99.9% effective and humane, because it's happening in public, someone will have a camera rolling when that 1/1000 accidental face swipe or mouth bash happens...
those who are ignorant of the animals physiology etc. will claim that there are animals being skinned alive, etc etc.

The seal hunt is not pretty nor appealing for many to watch,... nor are egg hatcheries, poultry farms, etc etc.

As long as it's humane and populations are good,.. there should be little issue

How are you making out Scradster?

Why not post your sppeech in progress. Can only help.

As for the monetary arguments, they are garbage. Eco Tourism looks greaton paper, but it does not provide real. It provide great money to the service provider (owner), so good they can winter in Florida. But to the employess, they get 10 weeks work at low wages. WOW, that helps the economy.

The truth is, wages are terrible for seal hunters, but these guys have no other options. It can be a long winter in NWFD and PEI, and the pogie does run out.

While ECO Tourism may provide more $$ in the long run, it does nothing for the men who lose hunting income.

I will type it up this evening. there wont really be any mid speech discussions, though other topics that have been already spoken about are kids in africa, whaling, stuff about green peace, one I like about those taking advantage of government welfare, etc. There is also going to be a anti seal hunt speech before my own. I hope to win. What ive read is that the hakapik is still used even after a seal has been shot to ensure it is fully unconscious.

You need to research the typical anti sealing stance, and address them in your speech, making them sound foolish.

I have corrected at least 20 people who told me the harp seal was endangered,..

The biggest lie perpetuated by the anti's is the killing of baby seals and in turn this belief by many is their biggest objection to the hunt...killing babies is the worst. No doubt you will address this misconception.

Yes the Hakipik is still used after the seal is shot, not too ensure it is unconscious though, to ensure it is dead. We have to make sure both sides of the skull are completely crushed. Once this is done (the seal is obviously dead) we are further required to then severe the two main arteries and let it bleed out for at least one minute before any skinning can take place.

When I worked on Sable island with grey seals I had pups that were no more than 60 seconds old bite me..... so much for cute and fuzzy!
There are enough seals to hunt, the killing methods are humane and better monitored than any slaughterhouse and 'cute' has nothing to do with the decision.... you should be in for an interesting debate.
Good luck with your speach- are you a high school teacher or is this a presentation to a class?

Lol, cute and cuddly they ain't, lol. They've got some dandy teeth and they know how to use them. One made a grab at my buddies leg one day, thankfully he missed his leg by a hair but took a good chunk out of his boot.

All those pics you see of the celebrities posing with the seal pups, either they killed the mother or there's a dozen guys off camera beating her back with sticks. They can be pretty vicious.
