Price on Colt Python

theres at least one in the EE right now, go to advanced search, set the time period to 36 months and newer, write python in the keyword, select the pistols and revolvers tab of the EE section on the lower right menu and click search

find some comparables
 
I purchased two Pythons (blued and slightly used) this year, one off the EE and one from Armco. I have kept a close eye on any that have come up on the EE and from the brief description of what TMIB gave, I would ballpark it and think it was worth anywhere from a $1000 to $1200. Again more information or pics always helps to nail it down a little better.

But from the description, I don't think it will be anything like the NIB, never fired, Nickel-Plated one that BC Mike sold to Mush a few months ago.

I miss it but it's like a classy dame I couldn't afford to lavish expensive gifts on. Now I've got a well used'59 Python that's a bit of a sl*t but we're made for each other.

True. But as BC Mike said unless you know the year and condition, it's really just a guess. Mine are both late 70's. One was $1250 and is in really good condition with hardly a mark on the cylinder, so I guessing not used very much. The other was $700 or so. Condition is good and the cylinder shows some lines, but what really brought the value down is that the PO tapped a small hole on top of the frame for a scope. Still shoots fine but the value goes down when you butcher them up like that.
 
thanks guys. I just am having a really hard time deciding on a .357

If I'm going to spend that kind of money though I think I should just look for a used DE in .357, I'm seeing those for 1100-1200

When you say "that kind of money" we don't know how much you're talking about. Are they asking 1500? 1800?

My suggestion is unless you have a lot of extra money get yourself a respectable used S&W 686 or 586. Pay around 700 and when you know you can afford a Python sell the S&W for close to what you paid. You can't go wrong with those workhorses. They are as acurate as the Colt and with a bit of tuning they can come close to the more expensive revolvers.

Buy Nickel, its better!

BC Mike you are King! Here's a tip that most can agree on:
When you are pricing a gun, a good description can put persons in the know on to a price faster.
Pythons came in many sizes, calibers, and finishes. Because they are Pythons and Colt does not make them anymore, they command premium value. A very nice blue 6 inch Python should go for more than a grand easily. With the right grips, the original box, and excellent condition, it could go to C$1500-1800.
I am the original owner of a 6 inch nickel Python and I think its worth two grand! And what's up with that avitar?
 
with pythons, it helps to check the serial number as it will tell you the year of manufacture.

my preference is the earlier the year the better, the earlier ones don't have the red front sight insert.

i favour the late 70's to about '82 manufacture and that is usually what you'll find

the original factory grips are a must, even though they suck, and you'll switch to hogue or pachmyer anyway, if it is to be a shooter.



also try out the trigger action if possible if the gun is in the store, of the three i presently have, one is not up to snuff,(bought from out of province gun store) and its with the gunsmith to see if cleaning and minor polish of the works would help (and that was the highest price of the 3.

also, any nicks or bluing wear can't just be touched up with cold blue because of the python's royal blue finish. if it is there, it's what you live with. rebluing the whole gun will be hard to match the unique factory blue.

also, read somewhere that colt quality started to go downhill, with their final "elite" series but no personal experience in that.

strange that if not a python, then your other choice is a 357 desert eagle? seems the two are on opposite ends of the spectrum, saw a coonan for sale on the ee a while back, would prefer that over a de.

if staying with python, my preference is the blue model, you can find a quality used one for about $1000 low to $1200 average, ee is best unless local gunstore for personal inspection. regards.

Just to had that it is still unfired, a virgin. It is very hard to fundle a gun like that and not shoot it. I ended up buying a SW Performance Center 5'' 686 to feel what .357 is all about.
