I recently was invited to a rifle rodeo. This is a competition where shots are made from a standing position without any resting aids of any form. The competition is geared towards shooting abilitities that reflect those required in a shooting form as those found afield. Although I did not shoot well enough to earn a prize, I also did not shoot bad enough to embarass myself. Why in the world is it called a "rifle rodeo"? Because out west, you win a belt buckle that states in words that you've somehow made the ranks. To some. the buckle means so much more than the cash. I've personally learned lots from more experienced shooters, so much so that my "offhand" shooting has improved a great deal. Who practises "offhand" shooting? gets away from the sand bags? and really puts their shooting to the test. Sure enough as we speak right now, I'm building a rig that will come up to the test of the "rifle rodeo". Are there any other "rifle rodeos" throughout our country that test a person ability to shoot off hand? If there were, many seasoned shooters would surely like to know.

I practice offhand shooting to prepare for hunting. I enjoy benchrest shooting but other than confiming your rifle is sighted in, it doesnt have much application to the bush hunting I do. If I could only get the deer to wear a six inch black target and stand still!!

:agree:

I also practice off hand as much as I can for deer hunting. When ever I can get to my buddies farm I try to practice since my shooting range will not let you shoot offhand.

A shooting range that wont let you shoot offhand? Wow... that sounds practical. Sorry to hear that.

So they only let you shoot on a bench? Does this apply to pistol also?

Silhouette anyone? up to 100m offhand with a .22lr for smallbore, and up to 500m offhand with highpower. It sure beats punching paper, and there's instant gratification when the targets (shaped as chicken, pigs, turkey's & rams) fall off the rail.

I shoot off-hand frequently, but only out to 100yds. No problem putting them into a deer lung at that distance...

I practice offhand for hunting as well.

Last week I set up 6 milk jugs and 2L pop bottles at just over 200 yards.

I'll generally lay the rifle down with a bullet in the magazine but chamber empty. At a deliberate pace I pick up rifle, sling it, open scope covers, rack it, aim it, shoot it, put back down.

Nailed the six targets in 8 shots. I'm ready for moose.

tell them to go #### themselves and join another club. not being able to shoot offhand? that is insulting!

I practice off hand and all the field positions. Once my rifle is sighted in I don't use the bench much. I still need practice, but I do practice it. If our club had more silhouette matches I would definitely shoot them. It all seems to be about F-Class were I am so I don't compete. That rifle rodeo or a bit of silhouette and I'd be inn like flinn.

+1 or 2 or whatever.

I use the 20yd 3 position match in the rimfire forum to practice all the field positions, with the addition of sitting. All a bench is good for is to get sighted in and to see exactly how accurate your rifle is. After that, the shooter is the weak link. I need all the practice I can get under field conditions, since I have never seen a bench or front rest waiting for me in the bush.

I put on a Big Bore shoot at the range here about 3 weeks ago.

Some of the events were charging rhino, broadside running tiger, 200m shooting stick-ring the gong, and a offhand cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon shoot at ~75m

Talk about humbling.

It's fairly easy to see who can shoot in field positions and who can ONLY shoot at a bench.

Now in my defence I took the brake off my 416 and realized it shot about
7.5" low at 100m.:D

My friend who won the Big Bore shoot has won a few shoots this year including a levergun shoot, long range shoot, and a 3 gun tactical shoot.

You beat me to it, that is an excellent sport for developing rifle skill. :)

I'd love to shoot silhouette, in fact the Drayton Valley rifle rodeo had such an event one evening when I attended. I was going to ask you where and how to get into it. I figured you'd probably tell me to join CSSA  So, I looked up their website and saw that there are no events scheduled for any of the western provinces :(

You're not alone there. A couple years ago the local rifle range went bench shooting only. All shooting is from a rest on the bench. No standing or offhand shooting allowed  Wanna watch the range Nazi's (caretakers) hyperventlate? Use 10rd pistol mags in your AR and rapid fire them as quick as you can swap mags  When they come over and start to squawk, ignore them and while wearing ear muffs & completely ignoring their presence, pack up and go to the handgun range and repeat rapid fire exercises with a couple pistols and some preloaded mags. They seem to think the only reason to visit the rifle range at the club is to sight in with hunting rifles only

You're in Northern BC and you need to go to a gun range? I thought there was one in everyones backyard up there:D I have a 50yd rimfire right behind the house and a 200yd a 10 min drive away. I do understand it for the handguns and restricted but not the rest. I hate organized ranges. Oceoloa F&G is semi organized and not bad but Kelowna F&G is less than no fun IMHO.

I gotta tell ya one of my proudest moments. Buddy of mine buys a Ruger 44 semi auto carbine on the EE. He's at the range with it, shooting off the bench. Fires about a 4 inch group with it, all in the black. Asks me if I'd like to try it out. Standing on my hind legs I fired a 4 inch group with it, all in the black. I was totally deadpan and acted as if I did stuff like that all the time. But it does go to prove that if you practice shooting offhand you can be a good shot. I practice shooting offhand constantly.

Wow I have heard of some dumb assed range rules in my time but this one takes the cake.

I guess hunters in those areas are expected to take a shooting bench into the bush with them.

Also do hand gunners have to shoot from the bench as well?
