The tree was dead. OK with that but any steel, e.g. nails, bullets etc. are very dangerous for a person cutting the wood with a chain saw. If you intended to cut the wood yourself, then of course my concern is invalid.
To me it was not apparent that you had a safe back-stop if by chance you missed

the tree.
