Long range in Alberta

Ok time to stretch my legs. I need somewhere to shoot up to 1000m. Other then just heading out west to the mountains does anyone have a good place to shoot where I wont be bothered? I know I could buy a membership to Genessee and use the 800m range but not sure if I want to buy a membership there if it is only gonna be good for a few more times this year. I wish I could get a guest pass for there but I dont think they have them.

Any ideas of something closer to Edmonton?

I have a few miles of distance at home here but it means travel and probably a stay over night.

That looks like it is about 3 1/2hrs drive from home. Do you have info on the range? Membership? Do they allow quads for checking targets etc? Any pics of the range?
 
Not AB, but the Northstar Range in Nokomis, Sask is good to 1200 with butts, target frames, flags, raised firing points and a clubhouse.
 
Perhaps I am stating the obvious, but Homested Range West of Calgary has fabulous facilities to 900M. Seems a shame to drive all that way in a province where you can watch your wife leave you for three days :)
 
Just read a crapload of posts on another board about that range. Sounds like it is a free use range with alot of garbage all over and alot of theft going on while people are setting up targets or making trips back and forth to their vehicle. Also one poster said some guy was started shooting at his 50m target while they were setting up targets at 100m. These posts were made in July so pretty recent. Dont think I would want to take the risk of using a range like that.

Homestead is more than just one range. There is a "free" public range, and then there are private ranges.
 
Still is 3 1/2hrs away. Anything closer to Edmonton. May have to buy a pass to Genessee I guess. 700m is better then 300. Do they have gongs set up at Genessee? What are out there for target holders?
 
First of all, if the $75 for Genesee is too rich for you, perhaps you should take up knitting. I hear that's a nice, affordable sport. LR shooting and cheap don't belong in the same sentence. Having said that (and perhaps I misread or misunderstood your post, if so, I apologize for my tone), the target posts at 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, and 700 meters are wooden posts, 6x6 if memory serves. There are steel gongs at 200 and up, unless someone has shot them down and not bothered to replace them. It's a 45 minute drive west of the city. An hour or so once you factor in city driving. There is no bus service, no candy store, no indoor plumbing or heated shooting positions or target butts. I know this sounds harsh, but it keeps the less dedicated away. FWIW - dan

I already belong to spfga range and did belong to phoenix also. I dont have an issue with the money. But it is expensive to pay if I head out there once and the range sucks. If I am paying for the range it would be good to have it kept up like the sherwood park range.

I was loooking for other alternatives. It would also be different if I go buy a pass today and it is good for a year, not 3 more months. But I might end up doing that as gas to drive 3 hours each way is gonna eat up 70 bucks pretty quick.
 
Randy is usually at the range and sells the memberships there. Also, he would let you use the range free to try it out for a day. Hell, I'd bet anyone out there would allow you to give it a go if you show up and explain your situation. The $75 is worth it if you only use it twice this year.
