So I have a P17 (BSA RTF registered as an Enfield) tucked away in the back of my Cabinet that needs some TLC, which means it's perfect for a project since it's been bubba'd already past any hope or restoration (cut barrel and civvies sights installed). I was thinking it would be fun to do some work to it...at low $$$ making the only real cost be a second stock and the sand paper. Where would one go and what would all you recommend (finishing idea's appreciated)? I'm looking to make this gun lighter so its better in the bush. A synthetic stock is what I'm thinking, but I don't know where I would look for one.

As of this moment my plan are as follows. Remove the Action and barrel. Clean and Sand the metal to remove the remaining bluing and the surface rust from pitting, then Cold Blue the metal and then tape it up to hide the cold bluing if it's a really ugly job. Then place into the new stock. I'm not after really pretty just want to make it so the gun is nicer to use as a bush/truck/backup rifle as it was purchased to be and not a safe queen that it's become. So any help would be appreciated including ideas on what do do to it.

I can add pictures but we all know what the bubba'd ones look like. Though I will take pictures of it through out the process to see just how poorly I do the job. Oh the faith I have in my skills.

Cheers
CK.

You can make a very nice sporter however there is no inexpensive job.

Firstly on the metal....do not cold blue as there is high nickle content in the steel especially if it's stamped "M.N.S.". Best to have the rifle bead blasted and either hot blued or coated. Secondly on the stock...I don't know anyone currently manufacturing a synthetic stock however Browns and I bellieve B&C did at one time...check the GunShows and auction sites...one will turn up. Very good option for a hunter. Wood with an epoxy finish just as good. You're more apt to find a plain grade one and have it bedded and finished. Thirdly...use a straigthen trigger guard and reduce the mag capacity to 4 or 5....keeps the weight down. Lastly...if cutting back the barrel to
20 - 22" and recrowning just go for the scope option...straight 4x power. Keep us posted on your project.

Thanks for the mag idea I will for sure do that and you mentioned not to use the cold blue so I'll be just taping the gun up it's spent the last 20 years with no real finish and fared pretty well and at this moment I just need the gun usable not pretty I might go back later and give it a paint (enamel) job myself since I have no intention of spending big $$$ so a hot blue job or a coating...not a chance I could almost buy a NEW truck gun for that kinda $$$. The barrel is already cut and crowned at 22" with Civvies sights installed so that's already done like I mentioned previously...just poorly worded sorry about that. So there are no longer any Synthetic stocks available new for the 17 action that sucks lets hope I can find one in good condition used. Though I would use a wood stock just I want something LIGHT!!!!!
As for the straiten trigger guard what will that do?

Cheers
