Who's got one? What game have you taken? What loads do you prefer?

I'm thinking of getting another one (BLR) for use on black bears.

1 whitetail buck with a 200gr. Hornady SP.

I really like this rifle, accuracy is suprsingly good, usually putting the first 2 shots within 1/2" of each other, all that with a 1-4x scope too.

The .358 is my favorite rifle caliber.

I shot a small bull moose with my Ruger M77 a couple of years ago and it dropped instantly! It did get on it's pins again but it was wobbly until Dad drilled a 35 Whelen through it!

I used a Sierra 225 grainer for that gun.

However, I could not get my BLR to shoot anything better than 'pie plate' groups with pointed bullets. And I tried many reloading combinations!

But...

The Hornady 250 grain RN would shoot 1" @ 100 yards.

I've got a Savage 99R in 358.

Never hunted it yet but I let my buddy use it last year and he took a nice doe with it in deer season. 200 gr factory winchester loads.

It's wearing a Redfield 2-7X Lo-pro which fits the gun perfectly and I get great 100 yd groups at the range.

i was looking at 358 but went with 338 fed. same case just necked down, i do believe its faster with all bullet weights.

on reloaders nest there is a guy painting 1/4 groups with his ruger 358.

nice caliber but i feel 338 and 375 calibers have better bullet selection

I have a new stainless 35cal bbl from Bevan King that is waiting to go on a 700 action in a TI take-off stock this winter.

.

i have one shot 6 deer 6 shots all on shot kills closes was 60 yards the farthes was 225 yards all were shot with the 200g hornady reloads.it sure can but meat on the table Darin

I have three of them. Only shot mulies with them so far. All between 60-200+meters. Used Speers hot core's and GS, both in 250gr's. I would think the 358w is best served with 225-250gr's. Im using 250 Hornady RN's this year and possibly Sierra's 225gr SPBT as it shoots so well in the model 88. As with wackloads of benchwork I've come to decide that H335 is far in the lead of all other powders in vel., accuracy and steady temperment. AA2015 shows good promise.

I used to have a .358 99EG. I shot one moose and two caribou with it and all died instantly at longest shot of 100 yds or so with 200g Hornady Interlocks. I foolishly sold it on EE. After owning nearly all major lever guns, and I find nothing cycles like the rotary action of older 99s. I wish I'd kept that one.

hi
i thought i would give a couple of my 358win.pet loads

200g hornady with 41.5g of hodgen 4198 with fed.primers
225g sierra with 42g of hodgen 4198 with fed primers

both theses loads will shoot nice 3 shot clover leaves at 100y with bullets touching. Darin

358win is a cool little cartridge, as flat and hard as an '06 in similar bullet weights...Almost as good as a .338 FED.:p:)

Where do you keep digging up the Ti take-offs?:D

I would prefer a .358 to a .338 due to the fact that I can load slightly heavier bullets and the .358 seems to come in more compact rifles (ie BLR). I hunt mainly in the west coast forests where long shots are pretty rare, so the heavier bullet appeals to me.

Thanks to 88Man on the forum, I now have a 358 too! Model 88. First 2 bags of brass just arrived last night. I am planning on trying 200 gr Barnes TSX in it. I have has such good luck with the Triple Shock bullets that it is now my starting point for any hunting load where it used to be partitions.
