Not sure if this belongs to Red Rifle section, Finland is not really a communist country. But here it goes. I was wondering whether it is possible to import a non restricted version of Valmet into Canada? Are they available widely in any country? Has anyone imported one?

Correct, this belongs in the red rifles section. Afaik, valmet no longer manufactures firearms so anything you tried to import would be second hand. As such I cant see a dealer finding a source of said rifles to import, much less the cost / benefit ratio of doing so. As far as single items for import, I think Questar runs an import service and I'm sure they could help you as far as the legality. There obviously is an FRT for them already so the only issues should be with the actual import of them, not with registration or prohibition.

I am asking about a non restricted version of the Valmet. Why would any new rifle of the same model be prohibited? It is not like there is a grandfathering of a non-restricted firearm.

The ones already imported into the country aren't. But any new import would be prohib.

so the two i imported a couple years back are now a prohib? :bsFlag:

if you don't know, don't say anything.

if you are trying to import front the states, the Hunter should still be exportable. the M78 most likely won't be approved for export because of the mean and evil baby killing flash hinder and bayo lug.

the canadian government doesn't give a crap about the features, but the US won't approve the export it it has some stuff, old or new.

the M78 prices down south are almost as bad as here. not quite, but still crazy. a used Hunter is alot cheaper, but you have to have the mags pinned BEFORE they come here.

dave's guns in blaine charge $250 US plus 3% of the value to export.

I thought someone had attempted to import new ones and they were rejected for some reason or another. Of course, this is what I heard on CGN, so the reliability is questionable.

I imported a Valmet M78 from the US 2 years ago. Took care of the paperwork on this end myself and used Leroy's in Montana as the exporter. No problems encountered at all. At the same time I heard a couple guys on this board were using Questar for the same models and they got rejected, although I can't confirm that.

2 year old info probably isn't a lot of help, what with the state of the US State dept paranoia these days.

I'd suggest contacting the US State Dept directly and asking them point blank if they will still issue export licenses for the Valmet M78.

their applications might have been denied because of the baby killing flash hiders and bayo lug on the M78

If that's the case, are the barrels interchangeable with any other type of AK pattern rifle?

Worst comes to worst, we could bring them into the country without the barrels and put on some Canadian-made ones. Though, the price would probably be around the same as those that are current on the market here, but more guns is a good thing.

I saw few for sale on various US websites and they were around $1200. Even with cost of all paperwork and taxes, it is still significantly cheaper then what I saw in EE section here.
Getting them from Finland may not be such a bad idea after all. I personally have no interest in Valmet. This question came to my head as a result of CZ 858 success in Canada. So I thought if a non-restricted version of Valmet can be obtained in large enough quantities, then they do not have to be so expensive here. But then again, it is a thought for dealers, which I am not.

they never made them on "large enough quantities". hence the reason for a premium price everywhere. $1200 is for a hunter. US prices on a NEW AK is ~$500. the M78 is still expensive down south.

i doubt you'll find "cheap" ones in europe.
