308 police loads

168 gr BTHP (Hornady or Sierra), 46.2 gr of a military equivalent powder (to BL-C-2 if memory serves, but I could be misremembering). IMI cases. For my 175/178 gr loads I use Fed GM cases (picked up a few thousand when the police tac squad were done with our range), and a slightly smaller charge of the same powder. My rifle prefers the 168 gr bullets, marginally anyway. The best accuracy I ever got from it was with 190 gr BTHP bullets. Slow, but tiny, tiny groups. - dan

i tryed the 168 with so so accuracy, also tryed the 185 scenars touching the lands with imr 4895 with 43.5 at 100 yards i can get .750 groups not to bad,but i would like to get it a bit better.iguess i am just use to shooting my custom.

has anyone ever tryed benchmark?

43.5 gr of Varget with 175 gr SMKs at 2.815 OAL.

Works like very well out to 600 and beyond.

If you have a short barrel and had it trimmed to 22-20 inches go with 46.0 gr of BLC-2

In my Remmy 700P I use 46.8 grains of Win. 748, Win. WLR primers, Win. cases and a 168g. moly coated Sierra Matchking HPBT. C.O.A.L is 2.820''. It shoots 1/2'' groups @ 100y. consistantly but is capable of better when I'm on my game:

it seems that the 168 or the 175 are the bullets of choise?i have a bit of varget left but have some 4064 and 4895 ,rl15 thanks for the help see what the weekend brings.

what is your seating depth?have you tryed other bullet makers in this weight?i have some bergers thats why i ask.is this a factory rifle or a custum, done any chrony checks with this load?

Bulldog284, is this a factory rifle (and chamber)?

It continues to amaze me how well factory match ammo shoots, and the implications of that when you think it over - this is well-made ammunition, but not made to work in any particular rifle. Loading a good bullet to magazine length, preferably one that is likely to be jump-tolerant, straight, in a FL sized case, with a safe max load, really seems to work well.

I've recently been shooting what's essentially homemade factory match ammo (thrown charges of H4895, in a FL Win case, with a Sierra 155 seated to magazine length), and it has shot very well for me, even at 900m (admittedly this is in a purpose-built target rifle, with a good barrel and a .308 Obermayer chamber).

I have to wonder though why you'd bother mucking about with a factory rifle, since I know you have a really good .308 (and you know how to shoot it, too!)......?

hi daniel
ya its a factory rifle i tuned the trigger and did the crown over,i have had some fairly good results with the 185 scenars.but as most shooters we are never satisfied,i envoy taking a factory rifle once and a while and see what kind of accurace i can squess out of it,and then i will most likely tare it apart and make a custom with it.and besides it saves my competion gun for next year. I believe the 168 has issues past about 800yds- it goes subsonic and loses accuracy. The 155's and 175's and heavier are fine as far as I know.

There is a problem specific to the _Sierra_ 168 (and *not* to Hornady 168s, or Lapua 167s, or Berger 168s. etc). It is dynamically unstable, which means that after a certain time of flight, it tumbles. It is not directly connected to its speed (i.e. whether it is subsonic or supersonic), but it coincidentally happens to occur around that point in time.

BTW a bullet not necessarily lose accuracy when it goes subsonic.

Seating depth is 2.83" COL. In my Rem700P they are shoot better than any combo I have tried. I have played with most powders and bullets out there and I still can't find a load that is more consistant on paper and the chronograph. The Chrony numbers in my load speak for themselves, very uniform from each shot.

Thanks for this post, it clears up a few things I was hazy on.

For ####s and grins try out the fed fusion (factory) 180 gr , I tried it on a whim in my 700P and got .4 @ 100 meters, not bad for 25.00 , funny thing was it out shoots the hornady 168 bthp 'match' hornady 'tap' and the the speer 'law enforcement' 168 gr :)
