Stooopid newbie question

.38 pistols arent prohib, its .25 auto and .32 auto, under the guise that these rounds are the common rounds in "saturday night specials" and dont serve a sporting purpose. With the stroke of a pen, the government was able to prohibit all pistols in these 2 calibers, as well as any pistol with a barrel length under 105 mm.
Dont lose sleep trying to think of a rational reason "why" , canadian gun laws dont make any sense what so ever!

I'm pretty sure I could conceal my glock 17 just as easy as anything else if I really wanted, so I dont buy that.That was just their excuse, an easy way to eliminate a large portion of the pistols in circulation without hurting too many feelings!
 
You have to understand that, at the time of the legislation, there had been a workplace shooting at Concordia where - in the media - much was made of the fact that the expressive killer had legally purchased some small (and concealable) handguns despite his having been known to be a deranged, troublesome, and threatening wingnut. Canadian police had just begun the widespread transition to autopistols, and used service revolvers were inexpensive (and concealable). Century Arms International was a large importer with a fat catalog of cheap and inexpensive (and concealable) pistols and revolvers. It was the affordability of these firearms that made them most offensive. The proles were arming, and with firearms that were concealable. Something had to be done.

The intent of the .25, .32, and 4" barrel prohibition was to roll all these nasty little threats to peace, order, and bad government up - neatly - like a dead biker in a piece of plastic.
 
"...its .25 auto and .32 auto..." It's all .25 and .32 calibre handguns, not just .25 and .32 ACP, that aren't on the exempted list. Those are high end target pistols. Made an entire class of handgun illegal with one stupid law.
 
Just to reiterate.. ( I had a *lot* of dumb questions when I first got into this..),
the .38 is not prohibited. And a nice way to get some value for your shooting dollar, is
to get a .357 magnum when you get your restricted PAL. Consider a Ruger Redhawk
or a Smith and Wesson of some vintage (others will be able to fill you in on which S&W
is to be recommended, or perhaps something else? - I really only know the Rugers).
But with a .357 magnum, you can shoot .38 special (which is quite a bit cheaper), if
you want to lighten up a bit, after blasting away with your .357 magnum rounds.
The .357 mag will chamber the .38 special rounds, which are noticably lighter in recoil,
and still lots of fun to shoot. The main thing is to have fun. :D
 
genrally speaking, .25's and .32's are cheap guns. makes like phoenix, jennings, are all around 100 dollars new. prohibiting those stopped alot of guys from buying cheap guns. not all potential owners are interested in STI 1911's and korth combat magnums, but for 50-75 bucks used, just about anyone could own a peice.

they want to do the same thing with the bullpup rifles. tavors at 3000+ didnt seem to be a problem, but when canam got a similiar rifle at an 'every man' price point, suddenly they want to reclassify it.:rolleyes:

I don't buy that either, as Marstar just had some $99 pistols for sale. Thats a pretty low price point for a pistol. Then again, it was a Norinco, but still...$99 for a handgun is a smokin (forgive the pun) deal.

As many other people have mentioned...Canadian gun laws are ridiculous...to try and understand the reason behind them is enough to drive one's self mad.
 
A reasonable person could go nuts trying to inject reason into our laws. A three inch barrel on a revolver results in a handgun that can be bigger than a pistol with a 4.4 inch tube. The nonsense goes on and on. Our mags are restricted to ten rounds but with a bit of training and practice you can learn to drop a mag and load a second one in a fraction of a second. Of course we all know that it's the eleventh round that kills people right? I've stopped thinking about these things as it just spoils my day. As the younger set says "it is what it is". Gezzzzzzz
