just wondering if this would make sense. Theres a creek near me that the ducks pile into, would drifting down this in my little 12ft car topper in the evening be a good idea of is early mornig better?

Thanks

My answer would be watch and see when the ducks are there.

Likely you could have success at both times but I would say that a day hole like that would be best early in the morning.

my first inclination would be to use a boat, but it should work (i know what a truck topper is, is a car topper for an el camino?)

Oh, btw, i know what he means:p

It should work. I am hoping to do something similar in my canoe on a big slough near my house. i just need the time.

Great way to hunt them. We usually do this after the morning hunt.
Murphy's law usually means you will be so quiet up until a bend then you'll smack the paddle up side the boat, ####.

Here on the shore of South Bay, we have over 500 geese and ducks / plus two swans daily. You can drive down and walk to the waters edge and they don't spook. Not much of a challenge as they are less than 50 yards away. Never found duck or goose hunting much of a sport around here and don't bother, as I farmed ducks for years.

No less sporting than stumbling upon a moose, deer, elk or any other resting, loafing or feeding critter and blasting it. We all have our own yardstick by which we measure our views of sporting chances. My personal feelings aside, hunting is hunting and the end result is that your quarry is dead. Be it shot from the sky or sleeping in the long grass harvested is harvested and a clean kill is something I know most of us strive for. Each method has its proponents and detractors. There is nothing more sporting IMO than putting out a decoy spread and coaxing a flock of geese or ducks into shooting range. Just depends on how far you want to take it I guess. We rarely shoot ducks or geese in range ourselves any more unless they are feet down backpedaling a few feet above the ground or water. We want to finish them in our faces, that means we pass up alot of opportunities for that perfect shot. I would say that dudley2112 has found himself a day roost spot that the birds are using for water and resting after feeding and if he wants to jump them and shoot them go for it. My way would be to find the exact spot they want in or are using and set up early a.m or wait until late morning and kick them out without shooting at them, set up my decoys and wait for their return. It usually doesnt take long and they most likely will trickle back in small groups giving plenty of shooting action and a chance to bag a limit as opposed to bagging maybe 1 or 2 and educating a bunch at once And it only requires a half dozen or less decoys usually and they bomb right in 99.9% of the time. We have had some pretty amazing hunts using the kick em out and wait for their return method.

Where exactly do you live?

Jump shooting is a blast! I used to sneak along in a canoe & cut as close to the corners as possible... It's VERY important to be SILENT... If I came around a corner & ducks were ahead, I would silently drop my paddle (spare in the canoe...) and glide as close to them as possible BEFORE moving another muscle...

As soon as they busted, I grabbed the shotgun & started dropping them!!!

Ah, some great memories there! And... If you know where a good beaver pond is... CHECK it out as a night roost! I've had some AWESOME hunts @ beaver ponds!

Cheers

It's a lot harder than that to get within 50 yards of the geese and ducks up here on our creeks and rivers.
Floating for ducks and geese is a great way to hunt , I've done it from a canoe years ago.

Wow, that brings back a lot of memories. I do more pass shooting where I am now but jump shooting ducks and geese on a creek is the best! The only thing I would add to that is if you can get someone to follow you after about half an hour they will scare up the ducks that you flushed previously. They don't even have to shoot at them. The ducks tend to fly around and land behind you. It isn't exactly the same but you get another crack at them and more bang for your buck while on the water.

sweet thank for the imput my duddy and i are going to head out after school wednesday ill let you know how it goes.... last time went plinking there there were tons of mallards just chilling at like 5 pm

i hunt in a beaver pond we feed it form ice out till about a week before season so were not hunting over feed it's a small pdbut hundreds of ducks in the morning and night they keep flying in all day we usually jump 30 or so on our way to our blind at night shoot a couple and wait for the rest to come in and theres a bunch of other little potholes we jump during the day to shoot em to but we always get lots of shootin lots of missing but the best huntin out there is duck hunting i think anyway
