I have great intrest in getting a AR15 platform and have been doing alot of research but the only thing I can not find out much info on is effective range or a AR15 with a 16" vs. a 20" barrel. Anyone have any info to share about this? Thanks

The shorter the barrel the less the velocity, the less the velocity the less the chance of fragmentation. Without fragmentation the AR turns into a .22 (more or less). Ive been thinking about getting a 20" for awhile now to round out the collection. Personally I would opt for 1 in a 1:7 twist rate. The 16 is just more compact and fractionally louder than the 20. Depends on what brand to. There use to be some choices in 18 but im not sure how easy they are to get anymore. Will you be shooting irons or optics or both?

The maximum range would depend upon your skill level. I would say maybe max range would be 600 yards or less with 300 being ideal. How big is your range though?

My local range (which I am hoping to join next month!) is out to 300yards. I know most guys are all into the CQB AR's but I want mine to be more effective at longer ranges as well....the model I am after is the Stag Arms Model 4R.

Most guys I know that shoot AR are into Service Rifle 100M-500M. Service Rifle is a great discipline to get into as it is almost all shooter. All you need is a decent factory rifle and a $200 bushnell to have a competitive rig (if they made a 4X optic with turrets it would be perfect).
As for the Stag I have had a 4R for almost a year now, no regrets (and it has been a training intensive year).

What if you wanna but extra on the Model 4R? Ie. flashlights and a forgrip....can you get a rail for it?

No problem getting a rail for a 20 inch rifle, you'll probably find as many options as there are manufacturers. In the US both the Army and the Marines use full length AR pattern rifles with rails as "Designated Marksman" style rifles. Google "AR 15 DMR"

If you are going to compete with iron sights, the longer barrel gives you a longer sight radious and therefore more potential accuracy. If you are using optics, then sight radious does not matter as much.
