I have shot alot of ringnecks in flooded timber! They pound them in it in Missouri and Arkansas too, just because they are divers doesn't mean they hang out on big water only. Ringnecks love rice marshes and Hooded Mergies are found in beaver ponds and marshes too! Look like any of these? P.S What does the speculum look like? Your answer lies in it!!
L to R

You my friend have shot yourself an immature ringneck duck. They have a white band across the bill. As they mature it becomes very pronounced in the males and a little less pronounced like an immature bird in the females. They are usually very tasty birds, they prefer to eat things like wild rice and celery etc. We have a lake we hunt them on that they flock to in droves just before freeze up and they literally tear the celery to shreds, it's floating all torn up all over the water's surface. But man they sure bomb into the decoys there and after being in that stuff a while they taste GOOD!!
yes there definatly one of the best tasting ducks ive ever eat
I see you are from Ottawa? If you ever find yourself in North Bay during the last 2 - 3 weeks of Oct message me and I will take you down to the rice marsh to hunt these little guys. It can be pretty good when there has been a good rice crop.
This reminds me of a story my CO friend told me.
One of his colleague was stop by a hunter and ask in helping identify a duck he shot. The CO told him it was $200 duck. This guys was puzzled. Why is it called a $200 duck. The CO said because it is a Grebe and here is your $200 ticket for the fine. Have a good day.
Here is another one he told me.
During one of his road checks during hunting season, he encountered an European (I wouldn't say which country).
Here is the conversation.
CO - have you been hunting?
Hunter - Yes
CO - what did you get?
Hunter - Snow geese. There were plenty.
CO - (Thinking to himself, snow geese? there are none around here) Can I see them?
Hunter - sure, they are in my trunk.
The hunter open the trunk and the CO saw a trunk full of white sea gulls. So out come the ticket book and write this guy up.
So now we refer sea gulls as ______ snow geese. (the blank is the hunter's nationality).
