We've been having a bit of a coyote problem on the farm, bothering the neighbours too. Taking a few chickens, turkeys, etc, here and there. Anyways, I'd like to post up and get rid of a few with my 12 gauge. Looking for any tips from others who've done this. I will be hunting in an overgrown field, I figured I would mow out about 0.5-1 acre and sit on the fringe in a blind. How does that sound, and whats the best way to get them in range?

Cheers.

I have taken a couple in turkey season. They creeped in front of the blind and I let them have it. It will work. Coyotes as far as I have seen don't travel in straight lines like fox. IMHO if you set up where with the wind in your face you should be alright. As coyotes circle down wind when they suspect something.

Good Luck.

#4 buck will take them down out to 50 yards with a good patterning gun. stick to 40 yards as your max range and whatever yote you shoot at wont be going anywhere.

I have to agree with the above sentiments.

An old fella back home who hunts coyotes all winter uses a shot gun exclusively. He uses BB shot and claims that the tiny holes in the hide often are invisible once the hide has dried out. His method was to use a rabbit in distress call after a really cold snap in the winter when they had been taking shelter during the blizzard rather than feeding. They would be hungry and desperate for a free meal and come running.

Using a call can improve your chances a lot, especially if they are not used to being called. However they learn quickly are are much less easily fooled the second time.

x2 - I've taken a couple as "targets of opportunity" while hunting turkeys. keep the range within 40 yards and you should be ok. Might want to pattern the gun to see how it hits at range.

Cool, thanks for the advice guys. I was thinking BB or 4 buck, both pattern wellin my gun. Was also thinking maybe a turkey choke for the bb's to tighten my pattern for some more range, I don't hunt turkey and this is a good excuse to buy the choke and play with it...

I guess for the call, there are some decent electronic ones, esp. the injured rabbit, for a bargain. I have absolutely no experience with them though.

Is a blind necessary or will camo do?

Camo is just fine -- and truthfully, you don't even need that. The trick is to sit with your back to a larger object (tree, rock, bush, whatever) and avoid moving as much as possible. I agree that 'yotes can get wise to a call once they've been shot at and missed, but at the same time I've witnessed the same one being called and missed in the morning, then falling for the same call from the same location later the same day. So never assume that you're 'yotes are uncallable. Keep at it, and sooner or later you'll get your chance. Do keep the wind direction in mind, however -- there's no point in calling if your scent is blowing directly into the animal's most likely approach path. Come back another day when the wind direction is more favourable. I think it's one thing for a coyote to be called and missed -- but IMHO if it's called and gets a whiff of human scent before taking off, it's a whole 'nother matter and that animal is going to be much spookier next time.

What type of BB shot are you planning on using; steel or lead? Can you still purchase lead BB shot? I would think that lead would be far more effective on a coyote. I just haven't seen any for sale anywhere.

Thanks Neo.

I haven't seen lead BB at my shop, so yea I'm using steel. That's why I was thinking of getting turkey choke too. I know my pattern with these rounds really well, but am interested to see what I can get with a really tight choke. I normally use a modified.

Nothing beats Heavy Shot dead coyote load. With a carelson dead coyote choke you can lay a smackdown on any coyote out at 50 yards no prob!

its pricey though....

steel BB does not work well past 30 yards from my experience, lead BB works a lot better...still got a few boxes of lead BB left and I think a few SSG's :)

DVXDUDE:

Where do you buy your Hevi-Shot loads from? I have not had any luck trying to find it in Canada. Thanks for your time.
