Hey folks, still getting the hang of loading ammo. Was loading up some fresh Winchester brass (.308) with large rifle primers in a Lee Auto-prime, and I managed to get one sideways. Any ideas on safely removing this? This is a new price of brass, I'd rather not throw it away. :(

As well, my Lee #2 Auto-prime shellholder is now stuck with a case in it, as the primer is keeping all three together. :D

I usually spray some oil through the flash hole to kill the primer, then squish it in enough to free the casing from the shellholder.

However, someone posted a thread about how water works better, haven't confirmed it yet though.

To save the brass, you might try using the decapping die to slowly push it out. I can't comment how risky that is though, never tried it.

Couldn't hurt, I would just do it to the exposed part though, probably best not to get any inside the casing.

I don't normally care because I just scrap my 9mm brass when it happens.

Just hook it with a dental pick and pry it out. Usually come out easy.

I'm usually too lazy to go the garage to get the picks so I squeeze till it will come out of the shell holder and then use a knife tip of really small screwdriver to hook the edge and pop it out. Never had an issue.

***Disclaimer BS - Wear gloves, glasses, hazmat gear and bomb disposal suit or whatever if you think its going to kill you. ***

LOL. :D

So something else came up of this. I was going to use the tip end of my Lee case trimmer doohickie (the one that passes through the primer hole)... Except that the "neck" portion doesn't fit down the new brass!

I was planning on not having to size new brass... But it looks like I'll have to after all. :(

That happened to me as well, although I don't trim pistol brass, when I first started loading I tried it out.....the case length gauge would only fit if I flared the mouth....

I remember thinking it was pretty poor engineering.

+1 on gently pushing it out with a sizing or decapping die. The same goes for removing a correctly seated primer. Primers are ignited by sharp blows.

You must douse it with oil, water, and at least seven other chemicals recommended on this site. Then you must don your crash helmet, welding helmet, and complete deep sea diving outfit, call the police dept, fire dept, ERT or SWAT. Lastly, you must go outside and run around the house or apartment building seven times. Go back in, dig out the primer , or push it out.

Sit down, relax. Reloading is fun.:p

Wear safety goggles if you're going to remove a primer and keep your mouth closed. In fact always wear safety googles when you reload.

Oh don't worry, that one, and the first five primed cases were all deprimed so I could FL-size them (although, based on the "feel", only the neck was touched).

My cases are all primed, working up some print cards so that I can stick them in the ammo box.

I'm still a bit unsure why Lee says the Auto-prime isn't suited for more than ten Winchester large rifle primers at a time...
