Moose Season

I'll be bringing my Remington 700 XCR in .300WM this year topped with a Leupold VX-III 3.5-10X40. I'll be working uploads for it this week. Either be shooting 180gr Barnes TSX or 168gr Barnes Tipped TSX. Just have a calf so I'm not expecting much. First pic of the gun, second is the first cow I've ever shot with it and third is a bull shot with my dads Ruger M77 300WM

Well I was going to take my Model 70 Featherweight Classic Stainless in 308 Win with 2.5x Leupold Compact.

But then I picked up another Model 70 Featherweight Classic Stainless in 270 Win last week and put my Vari-X III 3.5-10x40 on it and loaded some 130gr TTSX and shot them at 50 yds and had one nice group of 3 so we will have to see?

No 100 yd ranges out there?

The closes rifle range is about 2 hrs away so I just shoot at my farm or my Dad's farm and he has a spot that is sheltered behind one of his barns but the farthest you can shoot is about 70 yds so I generally do most of might sighting in and load development there at 50 yds. Then I move out to my farm where I have a 200 yd target setup. But it has been windy every day lately so haven't been able to try it out at 200 yd yet.

Top one - Moose Hunting... T/C Encore Pro Hunter single shot with 28" barrel in 300 WM using 180 gr Remington ammo and topped with Bushnell Elite 3200 with DOA 4-12X40mm. Weight as seen going at 8 lb 12 oz. With practice, I have been able to keep the time between successive shots to as low as 5 seconds.

Bottom one - Deer Hunting ..... Customized Rem 700 SPS rebored from 30-06 to 35 Whelen with barrel cut to 20" and topped with a Bushnell Holosight. Will be using 200-250 gr factory ammo. Weight as seen going at 6 lb. 14 oz. Would like to have the stainless steel part coated but haven't decided on a process yet.

Leaving for moosing hunting 1 Oct in Quebec ZEC Dumoine. Lots of lakes, etc, with potential for very long shots.

Deer hunting will come much later but hunting in a very bushy and closed area with shots typically less than 50 yd.

Good hunting to all,

Duke1

We dont' have any Adult tags but we will still go to the camp...who knows we may even see a calf one of these days :)

In any case Im probably bringing my Sako AV in 338 winchester and maybe a walk around irons gun for the bush....9.3x62 or 444 marlin ?

This year I'm leaving my .300WM at home because my son is coming with me and with the blast out the side of that BAR when fired I don't want to have to worry where he's standing if I get a chance to shoot. Instead I'll be taking one of my 700's in .308win.

Last year my 6 year old talked mom into letting him go with me for the week this year if he had a good year, school, swimming lesson etc. Well he held up his end of the bargon so talk about one excited 7 year old. I talked to his teacher this week and she was excitied to, gotta love rural schools.
I made the almost 6hr. round trip again yesterday to set up a ground blind so we'll have someplace to go if we get a bunch of crappy weather and do some scouting.
He's only got 7 more sleeps!

My moose gun. Will be going this weekend. 460 Weatherby with 450gr TSX. Scoped with a new VX-3 2.5-8x36. Had no time for load development but it is 3" high at 100yds and put 5 shots into 2". With more time I will get a better load, but the moose will never know:cool: Then for deer I will use my small gun, a MKV in 375 H&H shooting 270gr TSX's

Very cool of you James!!! I remember being so excited to go hunting with my dad that I couldn't sleep the night before...ah hell who am I kidding I STILL do that :) .

I don't think you'll have to worry about tracking Toebako...or gutting...or skinning...:D

Awsome bull Looch:rockOn:... Did you get HOT temperature during your hunting that week?

Yes - it hit 20 degrees.

The package we won included a guide. We would have preferred to be without, but it turned out to be a very good experience. He and I were walking through that slash and came across a cow about 40 feet ahead. She was convinced we were a bull. While we were figuring out how to get around her, this bull announced his presence. The guide went to work and brought him out to within 25 feet. It was very exciting. I decided to take him, because in 2006 we let large bulls go by on the first day. It got really warm and we didn't see another. We ended up taking a cow on the last day. This was my first bull - I can afford to be a little more selective on the next one - assuming we get to go back one day.

If the rain ever stops and I get this Thunder Bay Airport tied up before next week I'll be heading to the moose camp with one of my 99's in either 375 Win or 358 Win.
