CAS, Getting started

You're in for a lot of fun. For me the gun shopping and costume wasn't anywhere near the stress I went through to pick my "Nom de guerre" :D

I just got a deal off Ebay on a set of three silk and leather button down suspenders. I'm almost as excited about that as finding someone to load black powder shotgun shells for me.

From what I heard I should be shooting 7 or 7.5 with this coach gun. Does that sound right?

As far as "nom de guerre" my wife suggested "Frenchy Cannuck", I like it! I think thats probably what I'll go with, if it's not taken.
I already have a cowboy hat and right now I wear cowboy boots, button front Levis 501 and a snap shirt with white on white western patterns. I probably won't be buying anything else until I'm fully equiped, There's still a lot to get, rifle, 2 SAA revolvers and let's not forget gun leather.
You're are right this is a blast!!!!
I can't wait to start shootin.

You should be shooting whatever trap load is cheap.... :D For me that's been Federal #8 shot trap loads. The distances are so close that it's not hard to put the bulk of the shot column on target and as long as the mass is there it's all good.

Folks:

Has to be lead for CAS- most trap shot is steel. Targets are so close that steel shot will bounce back off the steel targets whereas lead squishes and doesn't bounce back.

Further details look at the SASS web site for the rules and regs for cowboy action. Most clubs in Canada follow these.

LGH (alias Niagara Glenn)

ps: it sure is a lot of fun.

I just ordered a pair of .45 New Vaqueros.. I think the cowboy bug may have bitten me, but I'm in Ontario, is this possible? ;)

I've been checking but so far all the cheap bulk trap load I've seen is lead. Steel shot costs more by quite a bit out this way so it's not the stuff that's going cheap.

But you're right. If there's a single sure way to piss everyone off and ensure you and a few others end up being tended for small wounds it would be shooting steel at the shotgun targets. It pays to double check before you pay the nice folks.

Chip, you're not allowed to have cowboys in Ontario? Is it a local or provincial bylaw? :D

Lead shots definitely. Canadian Tire has Federals, 100Rds I believe for $29.95 or there abouts. I'll pop in on Monday and buy some.
Next I'll be looking for a Marlin 1894 Cowboy in .357 with the 20" octoganal barrel probably for xmas, right now it looks like Doc Rowlands is pretty competitive. I'll keep looking.

Try and find a Marlin without the word "Cowboy" attached and you'll save at least $300.00! The day that word was attached, the prices went up dramatically. Hang out on this site for a while and you'll find a good used Marlin lever in .357 or .44mag for $500-$600.

Are you talking about the 1894? I have seen the gun and the price difference but hadn't realized they where the same or almost the same. I've been watching the exchange for a few months nothing has come up yet.
And Ben you are so right I've learned something new almost every single time I got on.

Well, when the lead bounces back at least it's lost most of it's energy and feels more like someone threw a few bits of coarse sand at ya. A very good reason to be wearing eye protection though.

Ben, I wouldn't take that steel trap load info to the bank. As I replied earlier the 4 cases of trap load I've gone through in the past summer has all been lead. Unless there's a new shift to steel for trap and I've been getting old stock I don't think steel is that common. When I do see prices on steel loads it's always a lot more expensive than the lead as well and definetly not a price that a trap/skeet shooter is going to want to pay. But I continue to check when buying just to make sure I'm getting lead loads.

Friggin' costumes are nearly as pricey as the firearms. Unless you sew 'em yourself. Pity there are no TSC stores in NB. They recently had decent looking hats on sale. Bought a $70 hat for half price.

Try places like value village and other thrift shops. Many of us in the clubs I shoot in found most of our non shooting gear there.
