You figure the average Mini30 with surplus ammo and open sites can do better than 3MOA off of a sandbag?

Anyone around Vancouver own one and like to take it out to PoCo sometime? I'd like to try one and see how it does in my hands. You'd be welcome to try my 858 too. Heck, I'll even supply the ammo.

I'm not trying to disrespect the Mini30, I like anything that goes 'Bang' reliably. But, after all the negative things I've read about the accuracy of the original, off the shelf Mini14's, I'm curious to see if the new Mini30's really are all that much better.
 
Some groups at 100 yards with the 858 that I banged on the bench to get sighted in. All shot off a sandbag with irons.

Upper left corner Just for chuckles. 155 Grain AMAX bullet with 15 grains of herc 2400

Upper right corner chec surplus... ack it shot almost as well as the premium bullet.

Lower Left corner cast bullet lee 160 grain with gas check and 15 grains of Hercules 2400

Lower right corner, a 123 grain hornady soft point loaded with wc 836 I don,t remember the amount. It was shooting over a foot high from everything else.

I'm planning on hitting PoCo tomorrow morning in the hopes of matching(or improving) the groups I made last Sunday.
 
I was no where near as consistent today as I was last Sunday. I went through a lot of ammo, and while there were a few groups that I could post pictures of and crow about, given how many rounds I went through to get those few groups, I won't bother. Perhaps my poorer performance has to do with the targets being in the shade today as opposed to last Sunday(Went first thing this morning, instead of in the afternoon like last Sunday) or maybe last week was just a fluke. Regardless, I was not consistent today.

The highlight of my day was putting 4 out of 5 shots into four inches at two hundred yards. But, the flyer didn't even hit the paper(and it's a very big piece of paper to miss). Given that I went through at least a few hundred rounds at different distances with no consistency at any given yardage, I can't call today a good day. But, it was still fun:)


On a related note, I met a fellow with a pimped out SKS. It was a very nice rig and he pointed me to a source for sks/cz858 parts over the border.


But, there was some good news: My pistol performance improved a lot over last week. I'm back to landing lead on my point of aim, whereas last week I was pulling my cz shadow groups up and to the right. Go figure...

Hi all,
Unlike fat tony we had beautiful sunny weather today so I got out with my new 858-2. Wasn't trying to be accurate, more getting used to the rifle and have some fun. Maximum distance was about 55m, I will try to get some accuracy testing done soon, curious to see how it does compared to the SKS which will shoot 2 1/4" on a good day.

I do have one question though:
I did a lot of research and tried to learn as much as I could about the dreaded Gremlin......has it been a problem in the recent rifles? I dry tested mine and it seemed to be fine but in the field I had 2 out of 85 that had the problem, interedtingly they were the 2nd round while I was kneeling both times.
When should I become worried about this? and what is the standard approach to dealing with this in a new gun if the gremlin should show up or develop?

I've been very lucky in that I haven't encountered any problems on my older 858-2 or on the new one I bought this summer. So far, they both work fine. Hence, I haven't spent any time looking into the gremlin issue. Sorry, I just don't know enough to offer any advice or help.

Did you decide on a mount yet for your 858. This what I accomplished with the scoutscope rear site and a .047 front post on a consistant basis the day we talked.

I'm assuming you're the friendly gentleman who was sitting next to me in stall #16 while me and my nephew occupied #17 & #18.

Although another fellow has pointed me towards the NEA rail(which I am also interested in), I'd still like to get a scoutscope mount for one of my 858's(the folding one). I really liked the quick release option with the scout scope mount on your sks along with the shorter eye relief that the scout scope option would offer. Furthermore, your sks's front site was also a big improvement over my stock front site, so that's another upgrade for me to chase after.

Thanks again for letting my try your sks. If you ever decide to sell your sks, feel free to use me as a reference for it being a very nice rig:)
