In 2004, I swore that I would never buy another Ruger again, maybe swore is a bit strong but I was determined not to be burned by them again. I had purchased a .243 Mk2, 77/22 Hornet, 10/22 22LR, and a .270 Mk 2. Not a one of them could shoot well - I spent a fair bit of cash and time trying to get them to shoot and less complete barrel swaps I ended up trading them in or selling them. At that point in time, I was adamant that I wouldn't be hurt again by Ruger - :*( But I keep looking at a 77/22 hornet and it seems like such a nice rifle (blued, walnut, flush mag with high capacity) and the temptation is there to try my luck again. So the question is: Should I buy another Ruger 77/22 Hornet? I am looking at the lightweight model with the blued barrel/walnut stock. Has QC gone up or am I asking for disappointment and more tears?

I've owned a number of Rugers over the years; 22/45, 10/22 X2, M77, and yes... the much hated mini-14.

They all shot well, performed reliably, and even my mini got 3-4" groups.

Never heard much to complain about the 10/22 tho

I've owned quite a few Ruger rifles and handloaded for some buddys, all of them were capable of sub MOA accuracy, except the Mini 14, which would still shoot fairly well, not nearly as bad as the Mini 14 haters seem to say!:p

I have 2 CZ 452's and 2 CZ 527's - I love them and they are great rifles. I am looking for something different - I like the fact that the 77/22 has 6 shots/flush detachable mags and a nice miniature action. Is it a pipe dream that QC has gone up at Ruger? When I got my last 77/22H - it was mid 80's manufacture and shot horribly (I think it was like 3-4" groups at 100yds). The other Mk2's were in the 2-3" area and every reloading trick in the book refused to make them better. I heard that the earlier Rugers had problems because of hugely varying QC of their barrels. Has this changed? I have heard nothing but great stuff about the newer hawkeyes and really great stuff about the 204. Is this just wishful thinking? Anyone buy a newer Hornet?

Rembo - you don't need to tell me about fireballs - great calibre but maybe I am a sucker for punishment. I know that the hornet is a PITA to reload but it was so long ago that I had those problems.... maybe I am being nostalgic.

I haven't got a lot of history with Ruger but I have a new Hawkeye in 25.06. It's a durable rifle, not the slickest action and not the lighest of triggers but it does shoot clover-leafs. Heavy rifle, little recoil, zippy round......bombproof.

I am very happy with my MK ll in .338 WM. Ruger has a good thing going with it's RCM and Ruger cartridges. The new Hawkeye rifles deserve a look if you are in the market.

I wouldn't buy a Ruger. Not to do with the quality of their guns, but the quality of their policies.

I suspect you're referring to Bill Ruger's comments on "assault rifles" and his views on higher capacity magazines. With Ruger's passing so has that corporate viewpoint - evidenced by their introduction of the SR 556, the new SR22, higher capacity mags available from the factory and their recent introduction of handguns dedicated to personal defense. If there are other policies, I'm eager to here them. Right or wrong, some people have long memories but sometimes selective standards. I met a guy who said he would still boycott Ruger yet was planning on buying a rifle from Cooper (Dan Cooper supported and donated to the Obama campaign - he lost the position as president of his own company over it). When I mentioned this the fellow stated that at least Cooper was fired and that he still wanted the rifle - go figure.

Sweeping it under the rug doesn't do it for me. An acknowledgment of their wrong-doings would go a long way.

They did not sweep it under the rug. Even one of their executives said after Bill R. died that not selling high cap mags to american public was a mistake and was one of the reasons for introducing 20 and 30 round factory mags to joe citizen. And then came the Ruger AR ...

Well, I stand corrected. Sort of. More than "one executive" needs to get on board and say that it wasn't just a mistake - it was an outright betrayal.

77/22 Hornet

I have the 77/22 Hornet and purchased mine used with spare mag, rings, scope, dies and plenty of new and used brass plus ammo. It had a pressure point placed on the end of the stock channel. With the ammo that came with this gun it shoots very nice groups.

I have not been able to reload for it as I can not find an RCBS 5 station #12 shellplate. I figure once I do start reloading for it the groups will get even better.
