Hi folks,

I'm going on a dedicated coyote hunt for the first time and need confirmation on leads needed for running shots. The ballistic program for my load gives, for a 10 mph walk, a lead of 22 in at 100 yards and 48 inch at 200 yards.

So assuming a coyote going flat out is doing 30 mph, and nose to tip of tail is 5 ft, this gives me a full coyote length lead at 100 yds and 2 1/2 coyote lengths lead at 200 yards. Does this sound right to experienced hunters?

I also have DNR permission to hunt at night and have a mil spec infrared combat light and red dot aimpoint scope on a M96 with 10 rds mags. I know you sweep the darkness till you get a red reflection from their beady eyes. I have a coyote caller with rabbit distress, any tips??:sniper:

I would estimate your leads on the direction the coyote is moving, not all move 90 degrees to the shooter.24" at a hundred seems a bit far to me?m2c.I would think off the nose at a hundred would work out just fine.

I don't recommend shooting a running coyote esp at night. It is a challenging shot and you may not kill it cleanly. If you see a coyote - make a loud "whoop" and I guarantee the coyote will stop for a couple of seconds giving you a nice exposure to shoot it. As well, I would check the regs - I am pretty sure that most provinces have a 5 round limit for hunting rifles.

I don't know about the 5 rd limit, but this is not a fair chase case. We are hunting a sheep farm that has a lot of loss from coyotes, thus the special DNR permit. You may be right anyway and I am trying to confirm it. We can't hunt off farm property.

I realize that you're on a pest hunt but I don't believe special hunts change the restrictions on firearms allowed (i.e. using restricted handguns/rifles) or the standard restrictions (i.e. min cal. size or bullet types). Personally I don't care but I would hate to see a fellow hunter hassled over mag capacity - I would hate to see your m96 confiscated over 5 extra rds. Regardless, good luck on your hunt and put up some glory pics...

I agree, hunt alot of yotes and almost all that I have encountered running in Will stop for a brief moment if one is to let out a good "woop". There's your shot.

But not all provinces. In Ontario so long as you meet the Fed. requirements (no mags designed for a semi rifle that hold more than 5 round) you're fine. You can hunt with your AR-180 with a LAR 10 round mag, or your Winchester 94 in 44 mag that holds more rounds than I can count, or of course the Lee Enfield that holds 10 rounds. Only restriction is that all shotguns have to be plugged at 3 rds. for any hunting here. So basically, check your local regs.
