Hey,

I posted in the Milsurp section and searched here to no success so I am hoping someone here will know.

I have a completely shot out barrel on my K98 now. I fortunetly have a replacement barrel for it but it does not have a rear sight on it.

So my question is: Does anyone know how to remove and install a K98 resar sight? And does anyone have experience re-barreling a K98 and could share their experience and tools I would need? Gunsmith told me I could do it myself and it was easy as unscrewing the barrel. Easy for him, I have never done it. Thanks for any help.

You're getting into un-charted territory there Recce21.

It's best to have a qualified gunsmith do the work for you unless you have access to a milling maching and have the proper headspace gauges, measurement tools and knoledge. It's not like barreling up an AR15.

Best to do it right the first time.

BUT...if you're like me, and that's not a good enough answer for you, I can point to you in this direction for more information on your particular rilfe. AGI video's are a wealth ok good information. AND it's FREE! Click here http://btjunkie.org/search?q=AGI

I have found K98 barrel replacement, and Mauser gunsmithing videos on here.

What caliber are you going to rebarrel it to? Is it a new manufactured barrel?

I like to keep it as original as possible, but If I were to change it up...I'd go to 30/06 for the K98. As close to 8mm as possible and easy to find ammo.

PM me if you have any other questions.

Thanks Dutchie! I will check out those videos and PM you if need be, thanks for the offer.

I am replacing the original Steyr barrel with one made at the Mauser Werks factory. The replacement barrel is almost brand new (as brand new as a WW2 dated barrel can be). The Steyr barrel on my BNZ 4 is so shot out it is smooth with no rifling. No calibre change since it is another K98 barrel.

The rear sight bands on K98's are soft soldered on, very easy to remove with a propane torch. Might not fit your new barrel...

Barrels on K98's are in there TIGHT! If your old barrel is a discard, or just to be used to lap bolt lugs if need be, you can remove it quite easily by using a hacksaw to CAREFULLY cut a ring all around the barrel about 1/16" away from the front of the receiver ring. Go about 1/8" or deeper. This will release most of the tension.
You'll most likely have to headspace the new barrel, which requires a GOOD lathe, gauges and skill.

Doesn't the heat from the torch change the properties of the metal and can ruin the bluing/colour?

No, because the band is soft-soldered on (low melting temp.) and the heat is concentrated on the sight band, not the barrel. The solder will melt before the barrel even gets really hot because the band will be quite hot causing the solder to become liquid.

They may have removed some bluing where the sight was going to be, though...

I thought you were removing a discard barrel???

I am, the barrel on it is a complete discard. I was more thinking about the bluing on the sight I am transferring to the new barrel.
