Looking to purchase a reasonably priced deer rifle that I use one week a year. (being honest here). I'll fire maybe a box of shells a year. I'm not going to spend $700 on a rifle for one deer a year.

I was looking online and stumbled across the Marlin XL7. The features seem alright for the price. I read a few reviews and they had the usual to say about it. Shoots well, doesn't recoil too terrible, etc.

Anyways, if you have experience with it, I'd appreciate your time.

Cheers.

I held one once. Seemed decent for what it is. It was nice and light, and from what I've heard they can shoot very well. It's not a super fancy gun, but it's not TRYING to be. To me it was very similar to a bottom end savage, but I like the stock on the XL7 better than on the savage, and I think the barrel nut on the XL7 is less ugly than on the savage. It has a blind magazine, which I'm not crazy about [I'd rather have a hinged floor plate] but if you get one, I really don't think you'll be disappointed. It's a good entry level gun, and is one of the best options in that price point. It's not expensive, it will be easy to carry, it will handle abuse okay [synthetic stock] and should shoot straight. From the sounds of it, that should work well for you.

handled one at bass pro. very light weight, and smooth action. gets good reviews. they were $329!!!!! at that price why not?

sorry, but they were not......they are still waiting for them to arrive....and have no idea when :((((

at that money, XL7 or XS7 is a good gun.....combination of all american guns...personally - I like it :)

$329 Canadian isn't bad. I looked at one at the Cabelas at Post Falls Idaho a couple weeks ago. They had it on sale at $279 US.

If you do a good search you'll find plenty of rewviews on Marlins new bolt action. They seem to give them pretty good reviews. I think its a great deal for these guns, I fondled one at the shop and its all a guy needs.

yes, the Bass Pro advertised them at 329, and had only XL7 (long action) in stock, but never brought XS7 (short action) in....... still expecting, but ..... even have no idea when.....

last time when I ask them (last Sunday) then had nothing in stock (but still gave away 2 rain checks for .243)....for XS7 model....at 329....

WSS has XL7 for 390 in .270 and .30-06 (again last weekend info)

i have a XL7 in 30 06 that's just an awsome gun, just recieved my XS7 in 243 last week. my XL7 came with 2 piece bases and the 243 came with the one piece base as advertised. they both have real crisp trigger with absolutely no creep. haven't shot the 243 yet. just waiting for the scope to arrive. a lot of people don't like the blind mags but i don't mind them at all. bolt is also very smooth. balance is good, not perfect but not bad at all. you might need to float the barrel, stock touches on both of mine, can't slide a bill in between. buy one you won't regret it. did i mention the're the two cheapest guns i own....

sorry but they sure as hell were. I didn's say when. This was in August so I have no idea if they have them in stock now, but that was what they were selling them for. I am not sure if it was the XL or XS though. I think the one I handled was 30-06.
