Always amazed at animals sense of smell

I was in my tree stand the other night and a coyote came walking by. The set up had the wind blowing at me so no animals in front would catch my scent. The little coyote was oblivious to me and walked 4 ft from the base of the tree I was in. The instant he was behind the tree it was like he hit a brick wall. he stopped put his nose in the air spun around and ran back in the direction he came and made a big circle to get around me.

I love seeing things like that I'm always amazed at the ability of animals. His response was instant.

Too bad it wasn't a deer it would of been easy pickens with a 10 yard shot.

I think coyotes are a good sign deer are near.
It was last year for me anyways.

I was hunting with my German Shepherd male. He wandered off a good 150m so I decided to play a trick on him and bug off and hide. I went a good 100m in the opposite direction while he was looking the other way and hid behind a large tree in heavy bush. Two minutes later he followed my scent to my hiding place as if I'd left a trail of dog cookies behind me. It was effortless for him.

I always watch my dog Glasgo when he stops and starts sniffing ... his head up high ... as we're WIDE open up here and no tree's or bush ... love it when he points, I yell go get 'em and he tears off ... waiting watching ... waiting watching .... jebus he's almost 1/2 mile away and then you see the birds take flight ... awesome awesome awesome!

I thought about letting him have it but I want to keep the noise down in my hunting spot. There have always been yotes in that area and there are a pile of deer as well. The yote will be somewhere else in a day or two and the deer will move through again.

The wind has been my enemy this year. It seems that it is forever swirling and changing directions. Messed up my elk hunt and has kept deer out of range. You set up only to have the wind change 10 minutes later

Sooner or later the karma gods will work in my favour or maybe the deer will get the H1N1 flu and have stuffy noses so they won't smell me

Scent killer is your friend. I get busted far less often when I use it. Last season I had a few deer come in downwind of me on days where I used lots on my gear, and then get busted by deer coming in from the same direction the next day (got lazy and didn't use any)

Scenting

If the dogs/coyotes have their heads up they are air scenting ( picking the smell out of the air they will work the cone til they find what they looking for while working into the wind) if head is down they are tracking / trailing .

Dogs are good scenters whether air or ground . I've laid tracks and hid on Service dogs for 10 yrs it's fun watching them work .

I had a similar situation on the ground with a doe, I watched her for 5-10 minutes as she browsed in the field, then as soon as she got down wind it was all over, tail up and she was gone.

I remember vividly many years ago putting the stalk on a couple of moose in a slash. Was early in the AM, and I had a favorable wind, but very little cover. The shot was a little trickier than I wanted to take, so I started using what cover I could to close the distance. When I was in what I thought would be comfortable range I stuck my head up from behind a little log to see exactly where they were and the wind just shifted around as I felt a breeze on the back of my neck. Knowing the jig would be up, I figured I had nothing to lose, so stood up beside a small evergreen and just as I was getting settled to shoot, the moose's noses went up and off they headed. Fortunately for me, they ran almost straight broadside, and the small bull ran into a 200 grain Partition from my Norma Mag. They sure do have good noses. Regards, Eagleye.
