Hello all,

I have spoken to some people about the CZ858 (non-restricted) and was wondering if this would be a good gun for a newb. What should I know about this rifle? Is it reliable, hard/easy to disassemble and clean? What is the difference between corrosive ammo and regular ammo? (I can only find corrosive ammo) Most importantly it accurate?

You can buy some non corrosive ammo at SFRC one of the sponsors on top of the page...
i think they still have S&B soft points...
 
It was my first gun and after 8 more purchases I think it's a great choice. Not only is it surprisingly accurate but it also allows lots of trigger time with cheap ammo. I think you can't go wrong with an 858 for your first purchase IMHO.

I think if you are attracted to this style of rifle as a first firearm I would look at a Russian or Yugo SKS. You can make a SKS shoot and look like a AK, 858 style of rifle for about half the cost of a 858 tax in. Then you could spend all the money you saved on Ammo.
 
From what I've read, the SKS is nowhere near as accurate as the 858. That said, the difference in price could buy a couple crates of ammo for practice:D
 
I picked up a CZ858-2 from Wolverine about two years ago and haven't regretted it since.

I also own and have practiced with Russian and Chinese SKS, both of which perform reliably and reasonably accurately. Shooting from a sitting (on the ground, with rifle resting on knees) or in a standing position, I probably shoot about as accurately with the SKSs as with the CZ858. That said, when a friend of mine with far better shooting ability than I sighted the CZ in off of sandbags, it quickly became apparent that it has the potential to shoot much better than the SKS. According to some other friends who've seen me shoot, I also seem to have been particularly lucky with the SKSs that I've got, since some can come with oversized bores and other impediments towards accuracy.

The idea of buying an SKS and using the money saved on ammo has some merit, but if you really enjoy the hobby, you'll probably soon be wishing to upgrade to the CZ. Plus, adding accessories onto an SKS can quickly begin to feel like pimping up a Ford Pinto, whereas accessorizing a CZ can really help bring out it's finer qualities.

From a hunting standpoint, I think that the CZ would make a far handier rifle for pushing deer though the bush (it's lighter and balances better), and think that the detachable mag is a great feature when you're going to be regularly loading and unloading without firing a shot.

I have both SKS and CZ. The SKS is a nicer rifle if you won't modify it. The CZ is new and more accurate. The CZ is lighter if you will use it as hunting rifle. If you don't worry about the money, buy both, otherwise stick with the SKS.

Thanks everyone for all the advice! I think when school breaks for the month of December I'll buy one. Most people have only good things to say about it so there must be something to it!:)

Is there anywhere that sells the non-corrosive ammo? I visited the SFRC link at the top of the page but no luck, anyone have any suggestions?
 
Thanks Deckard, your right though, I will have 4 weeks between classes to read and learn to strip it down, clean it and reassemble. Too many essays right now!:runaway:
 
Its was also my first rifle, its a lot of fun, you can waste a lot of surplus ammo without feeling bad.

Its also the only gun i regret selling. I will be getting a new one around christmas time for sure, and this time i will keep it. In the mean time im looking at a russian sks while i save up.
 
The cz 858 is an excellent rifle. Accurate,reliable,easy to field strip and plenty of surplus ammo to practice. Was 1 of my best acquisition ever! I have 3 sks too but now my cz is my main rifle for my need. Buy one, you will not regret!:D
 
I haven't shot my CZ yet, just got it a few days ago. I ordered some of the Israeli aftermarket parts for it because I think the look and feel of the "sardust plastic wood" really sucks. I pulled the rifle out of the original plastic and I thought "what the f....".

Not nice at all. But I have hope, the polymer parts will probably transfer it completetly. But for that money you could get a CQ already, the problem with the CQ is that it is restricted, so no hunting :-(. All that compromises and restrictions.

That said, I have 2 SKS and they are beautiful rifles, both to hold, feel and shoot.

You should get a SKS first unless you will be using it a lot walking around in the bush. It's probably too heavy for that.
 
Well the furniture is all a matter of opinion i think all the plastic #### looks terrible on the 858, only thing i would put on is a rail on the rear sight for a red dot, and a factory folding stock.. the wood looks great. its a good gun for a first time shooter cheap, rugged, fairly accurate for a carbine etc etc plus you can put all that gross looking plastic on it if you want, the options are endless
 
I think we are almost sold out of the S&B but we jsut got some more PRVI 7.62x39 SP non corrosive. More S&B on the way.
