colt 41 1892 what are they worth? (antique)

USA Antique Status is not the same as ours they get and extra year being all of 1898.
our cut off is Dec 31st 1897 the USA cut off is dec 31st 1898.

I think your in a gray area Starpuss useing the Fact a American said its Antique and it got thru customs wont save you.
You dont Need a RCMP Letter but you better be able to prove its pre 1898.

The Ser # on the Bottom of the grip is the only way to date theses 1892s.

The fact the Ser # is Worn off might give you a break there is ways "they" can read that Number.
Its not Ground off on purpose just worn.

Try takeing pics of the Butt at diffrent angles sometimes you will be surprised what the Camra can show up.

Yes I tried the cam trick and well my cam sucks! i have 26 pic's witch all look bad like this one. The gun had a thick colt of nickel covering the s/n and under the nickel was rust.

ill try takeing some new pic's now that i can use a diff cam to see what i can make out.

See on the left side of the bottom of the frame........
That spot where it is a different color....and that edge where the colors change.
Looks to me like someone in the past hundred or so years took a grinder or something to it...

That still doesn't prove it's not an antique, but it looks to me like some rascal f@cked with it?????????????

I know that crime labs can use acid to pull up serial numbers that have been filed off......

the s/n is on the other side.

Yeah, the right side? Thats the side that looks to have spent a lil' time with a file.....
That lil' bit on the left looks un-touched.

Ok... before you where saying the left side now you’re saying the right side lol...

On the right side where the s.n is the nickel was lifted up and rusted under the nickel , the nickel came right off with my finger tips. Then under that was rust. No deep pit's. and on the left side in that pic that what it looked like when i pulled off the nickel

Not trying to bust your chops Bud. No, no law saying you need an rcmp letter. But if you are wrong...
Just trying to make you aware of the seriousness of your situation(as it remains you possess a potentially illegal gun) and that of your potential customers.
You clearly advertize the gun as an Antique. That could get someone in serious trouble and would also reflect poorly on all of us.
EE rules say no illegal stuff. Your gun, advertized the way it is, could very well be in this catigory.
Sorry to have to point this out to you. It's a bummer for sure.

The LEFT side looks to be untouched.....
The RIGHT side (in the quoted photo) looks like someone had a go at it.
In the quoted photo that spot on the left side looks to be raised and rusted differently. It also looks to have a round edge like a grinder wheel.
The serial number would be stamped in the steel frame not the nickel plate.

yes but the nickel would of held a inprint of the s/n

well this gun came from argentina so you never know what they did to it.

Maybe, but if there isn't a number to see............
Also the condition of the nickel looks like it was pretty rough in the first place.
Maybe, somebody removed the serial number then re plated the gun??
A hundred years is a long time......If only guns could talk, eh?

There appears to be no way to establish antique status for this revolver.
In the absence of any demonstrable evidence that the revolver has antique status, it is most unwise to offer it for sale as if it were antique.
It MIGHT be antique. It MIGHT be unregistered restricted.
CBSA allowing import proves nothing.

..a potentially illegal gun..

I'm not sure about that, I think worst case scenario is this gets registered as a restricted pistol right?

Anyway, Starpuss, if you have a flat bed scanner, try to take a scan of the area in question at the highest resolution, you might be able to see more details.

For example, on this old sight I scanned you can see all the scratches and machining marks etc... lots more detail than you would see with your eye, well at least more than I can see with my eye.

If you need any help let me know.

wrongin the worst case scenario a poor unsuspecting buyer ends up spending a few years in the clink. As I have told starpuss before, if you are doing stupid sh!t with an antique it becomes a prohibited/restricted weapon.
If you think it is worth the risk thats your call.........
