The SKS... Just WHY?

My Grandad taught me to think of a gun as a tool. Think of the SKS as a Swiss Army Knife chambered in 7.62x39. Neither are great single purpose tools... It's even got the screwdriver and folding knife =D

That my fellow CGN'r is a neat way of looking at things! the whole folding knife thing I mean!!!

My kids distracted me, never finished the post.

Have you ever shot one?

I was skeptical until I got one in a trade. The things are super fun. Impractical for the hunting that I do. But pure fun.

Technically the SKS is a smaller younger brother to the PTRS anti-tank rifle, so it is a very strong and well proven design. :)

And this great pic below is a 56K warning...

Also the SKS is also a great rifle to get new shooters on. :)

the sks isnt that guns little brother its his fetus.

A $169.00 SKS, fitted with $500.00 of aftermarket accessories is still a $169.00 rifle! I bought mine, as I needed a carbine for WW2 re-enactor matches, and the SKS was first fielded in October 1944. It is far cheaper to buy ammo, stripper clips for the SKS, than the alternative which was the M1 Carbine. Plus the range is a maximum of 100 yards for the carbine portion of the matches. When SKS stripper clips are cut down it is a slick, fast handling, fast reloading carbine, but not terribly accurate past 100 yards. Nothing funnier though on a Saturday morning that watching bubba rambo try to get minute of T34 tank accuracy with his duded up scoped, plastic stocked, bipoded mounted SKS.

To me, a $169 SKS with $500 of accessories is a $100 rifle.

But a $169 SKS with nothing on it that didn't come from the factory is a value greater than $169, in my opinion. It's a solid gun that runs...I believe every man (maybe every person) should own a running, dependable rifle. An SKS is a good way to get that.

But when tactibubba attacks...man, that ruins the SKS as far as I'm concerned!

In my opinion there are two types of SKS owners, the ones that are collectors and the ones that are shooters. Everybody has a right to their own opinion. I would like to ask misanthropist, has he or she ever shot a SKS that has had trigger work done with open site modifications and a stock that fits you and your shooting style. By the sounds of your opinions I do not think you have. You call it tactibubba and thats your opinion, but tell me this am I a Bubba if I enhance the Shooting performance of the SKS?????

A number of people in Russia looked into manufacturing new batch of SKSes chambered for .308 Winchester (and other calibers). Turned out that the machining costs alone using modern techniques (CNC) were close to a 1000$ in quantity. Just look at the receiver and the bolt cover.

We are very much spoiled with the cheap SKSes that former Soviet republics and satellites dumped on the market. In reality they are very much under-valued guns that are cheap to buy, but not cheap to make.

As a total aside....

The blueprints for SKSes are kicking around on the interweb (guns.ru had them at one point). If you own a CNC machine, I'd be curious how much you'd price machining receiver/bold/bolt cover at. After-market 19" barrel will probably be in the range of 500-600$ (If not more) from Elwood Epps or Bits of Pieces (at least that's what I was quoted to rebarrel Beretta CX4 Storm and Ruger PC9). Then there is stock, mag, trigger group, gas system (new gas rod for my CX4 Storm just cost me 60 USD, for that's probably a very realistic estimate) etc....

Not cheap to make from scratch, that's for sure.
