The SKS... Just WHY?

Ok, to clear my name. I do not HATE the SKS, I merely wonder if there is any stigmas about buying the 7.62X39 ammo in bulk, as well, alot of people say you can get SKS parts easily, I can see that as true, all the same, doesn't that really take away from it's collectability? I mean, what's something worth really if any man jack or joe can replace it?
However, I do see the good things about it, and I personally won't consider buying one as my collection is stricktly 1939 to 1945 dates. I do like the SKS design, but personally, it's not my thing. I wish you all the happiness in the world cleaning your semi autos, me, I'll stick to my mad minute on my Lee Enfields. ;)

Just shoot 200 rouns and you will know. My 13 year old son doesn't want to shoot anything else anymore.

I do not think they tote them like they are gold but people are pretty proud of what you get for a rifle that starts at $200.00. Just surf the net and see what you can buy for these rifles. There are websites out there that specialize in parts and accessories only for the SKS. If you put a few extra dollars into these rifles you can make them shoot pretty good with surplus ammo for .17 cents a bang. Less than half the cost of a CZ858 tax in for the same style of rifle. For example.

Stock...........$100.00
Trigger Parts....$30.00
Magazines........$20.00
Recoil buffer......$9.00
Muzzle Brake.....$10.00
Scope Mount.....$75.00
Scope..............$50.00

I know what some of you are saying "What a Bubba" but all you have to do is remove all the parts and you are right back to your Russian Refurb SKS.

Two reasons: (Russian version) Thick winter coat, mechanized infantry.

Two other reasons: (Asian version) Smaller people, jungle fighting.

Because when the "SHTF" in 2012 , I don't want to get zombie guts all over my beloved LE's . :evil:

And also , a clinical study showed most people who don't like SKS's actually enjoy eating liver n' onions ! :puke:

Other than those specific reasons , they're a helluva lot of fun !

All it does is screw up the handling of the rifle.

I have two, and both have the original magazine. Of course I got them for $35 each from an importer friend:D
The bayonets have been removed, the bayonet lug has been removed, and the ONLY other alteration has been to to get rid of the crappy stocks and install moulded ones. Good for shooting tin cans.

You are bubbaing your gun pretty hard for being such an elitist wannabe ragging on people with big clips.
 
For me, it's a piece of Cold War history & an sks was one of my first rifles as a kid... So, when the Russians started landing, I bought 4, looked them all over & kept the one that appealed to me the most, they were all in great shape. I then gave one to my brother & another to a friend.

In short, I just had to have one!

can you think of a better camp gun? a 12 ga pump is slower to use semi auto 12's are not as reliable. i fired ten rounds into the sand for my neighbors son, he spent ten minutes digging them out. not one bullet was deformed from this abuse. we called it the redneck easter egg hunt. i would rather have an sks in camp; when yogi shows up to crash your breakfast, than just about any other semi. mine has seen over 600 rounds without cleaning and has only caught the brass once. everybody loves to see how fast you can empty the magazine. my only two #####es are looks and accuracy. i have replaced the stock and added a red dot sight on a scout scope mount, so mine has cost me 450.00 including the original purchase price. military rifles dont necasarily appeal to me but this one has won my heart.

Your a fellow I can understand here. A piece of Cold War history is really something that I can appreciate. As for the other reasons here, I agree, it may be cheap and admittedly, the non-mod Simonovs do hold a small interest for me, but just would be the odd boy out in my collection. If there are any zombies, well they shall have to contend with my No.5 Jungle Carbine. Just a question, what is the Overall lenght of the SKS? I'm a short man and enjoy smaller guns.

I just took a measuring tape to my Russian... It's 40 & 1/4 inches OR 1.023 meters (roughly) buttstock to muzzle...

If you don't crawl a stock, then the Russian length of pull isn't a problem...

Not everybody interested in guns is a collector. I'm not interested in collecting anything, myself. I like performance. The SKS will run dirty, take a beating, shoot with reasonable accuracy, take a beating and still run.

Some guys like hunting rifles, some guys like expensive rifles, some guys like rare old rifles. I like to have guns that won't let me down if I ever NEED guns. I don't care if they're pretty, fancy, rare, unique, historical, sneezy, dopey, or grumpy. To me they are not much more than machines that launch bullets. I want extremely effective bullet launchers and the SKS is great for that.

I don't actually own one any more but I had a few back in the day. The first rifle I ever bought was a Russian SKS, for $175, back in about 1994. I was still in my teens.
 
A few years ago a friend let me try a Norc SKS, which he was offering to sell to me for $100... Well, that was without doubt the WORST long gun I have ever handled, in 25 years of shooting. Heck, my SHOTGUN was more accurate at 50 metres! So, that really turned me off the Simonov for a while. I have since realized that 100% of the Norinco products destined to pass through my hands will be utter garbage, so I can't blame the SKS design...Now, I am older and wiser, and have a child to feed, so my ability to purchase .303 for my Enfield collection is rather curtailed.

The Russian SKS will be a next purchase for me, because:

1) They are cheaper than one week's groceries;
2) Ammunition is nearly as cheap as .22 bought at Crappy Tire - Just kidding, but it IS cheap!;
3) They are simple;
4) They are tough - I will not panic if it scratched / dropped / bounces around in the veehickle;
5) They are an icon of the cold war - Heck, I am old enough to have trained to fight the communist hordes, and it will be neat to have one of "their" issued arms in my small collection;
6) Attached bayonet - nothing to lose! And hours of fun once you run out of ammo in the woods....

Those are my reasons, but really... Anyone can come up with their own... I mean some freaks like the AR15, but I'll never understand WHY??!! Taste is a personal thing...

Why the SKS?

1. Cheap to feed
2. We can't have AKs
3. It's a nifty relic of the Cold War.
4. Did I mention that they're cheap to feed?

I guess the SKS isn't going to be very interesting if you just want to shoot tiny groups off the bench, but their accuracy isn't that bad for what they are. I can consistently hit clay pigeons from the prone position at 100 yards and offhand at 50 yards with my Russian SKS.
 
The SKS is a proven design. I have 1 norc, 1 well used russian and 1 unissued russian.
-Extremly reliable rifle
-Cheap to feed
-Relic of the cold war
-Accurate enough

Now i have a cz 858 because,for me, the handling is better and accuracy too. But i will never have fear to put my trust in a SKS for any situation.:D
