.460 Magnum Carbine

Would you like to see a semi-auto sporting carbine in .460 Magnum?

My dogging gun is a Ruger .44 carbine with a red dot. It's just the ticket! presently, it seems the only way to get a magnum pistol calibre carbine, is to buy a lever gun.

Who do we appeal to for the production of a carbine in Smith & Wesson .460 Magnum? Do you think it would sell or be at all useful?
 
Didn't "Wild West Guns" in Fairbanks try making a lever in this cal.?
But like 458lott sez ... Why? The rifle isn't going to be that much smaller than a Guide Gun if at all..And I bet it would cost twice as much..

How? The 45-70 platform is bigger, heavier and the cartridge uses more powder.

According to Mike Haas' Ammo Guide: .460 S&W Mag. Muzzle velocity 2052fps, Muzzle energy 2592, Bullet weight 283 grains, Case capacity 58.5 grains

This is coming out of a six inch barrel!

Please provide comparable 45-70 data. I had a hard time finding it.

I can surpass every 460 load with my Marlin 45-70 guide gun I load from 250gr Barnes to 550gr WLNGC's the heaviest bullet I load for my 454 Casull is 405gr and the heaviest available that I am aware of is 420grs.

Even if you stuff these bullets into a 460 case the 45-70 Marlin has more case capacity and can shoot heavier bullets.

My 20" barreled LSI Puma M92 in 454 Casull is almost exactly the same length and weight as my Marlin 1895GS in 45-70 the only advantage that the smaller cartridge has is I can stuff 9 454 Casull bullets into the mag tube compared to 4 in my Marlin.

Now Marlin is selling a 7 round mag tube in their SBL model so even that difference isn't that great.

and yes the 460S$W has higher velocities than a 454 but it still can't top a 45-70.

and one more yes I would buy a lever if it was available in 460S$W because it would be cool to be able to fire 45 Colt/454 Casull/460S$W out of one rifle.
 
The 45/70 would certainly trump all these, I'd like to see a short handy .500 S&W levergun, which when loaded hot, may give the 45/70 a run. The problem i see with semis is their tendency to not function/feed at the worst of times, they work well at the range, but get out in the bush, in the cold and things have a way of going South.
 
Just go for the 50 Alaskan it is already available in the Marlin platform but when you look at the ballistics it really doesn't give you anything over the 45-70 so what the point stick with the 45-70 it does it all.

What I see in the 45 Colt/454 Casull/460S$W is the fun factor and I'm thinking many would be surprised at the killing capabilities of these rounds.

That, is the answer I was looking for!! Now all we have to do is sell it to the manufacturers.

Personally, I'd like to see it as a semi-auto. Does anyone have any idea, or know someone who knows how to pitch this idea?

Oh yeah, the fun factor!

I just sold my .460V because I couldn't get ammo for it in Alberta, a .460 carbine or lever would be cool, there's already an AR in .450 Beowulf, but there would have to available ammo for it.
 
the .460 S&W is the most powerful all-around HANDGUN round going, all things considered (size, velocity, penetration, mass retention). But as I said,
None for your gun=no fun.

....I assume we are talking about the .460 S&W Magnum.

I found 10 boxes in Edmonton a few weeks ago. I guess I should have left you some. Sorry. ;(

And I bought it for the brass as well....I'll be reloading it after this 200 rounds are gone. But at 2.50 a shot, they tend not to go to fast...lol

Cool concept. But I wonder how a lever would cycle / feed those 3 calibers....I believe OA length may be an issue...lol....would be handy though, I agree. :)
 
My LSI Puma M92 feeds/cycles both 45 Colt - 454 Casull without a hitch and I shoot from 200gr Cowboy 45 Colt loads to 405gr WLNGC 454 Casull loads in the rifle so I'm thinking if it is built right there shouldn't be an issue.
