Swiss Arms Rifle Optics

I can't say what works well, so I'll tell you what didn't work for me.

I had 2 different ACOG TA31F's on both my CQB an Carbine but found the lack of eye relief to make anything but bench shooting (!) uncomfortable.

Your mileage may vary... I love the factory irons but am considering an Aimpoint for the future.

Cheers

I find there to be lots of eye relief with the TA31, just pull your head back & you can see the reticle just fine, the field of view around the reticle gets narrow but the reticle should be on target & the reticle stays generally centered with no paralax differential or so that is how I find mine to shoot & what it looks like when I view a target in different positions. Maybe it's just my good eye;)!!!!

I love my ACOG as well - would love to get an Elcan and an S+B one day. The new Elcan's sound good

Already spent a 15 grand on guns so far since getting my RPAL this July.... Got everything I need for now. Going to buy a bigger house next so I can have a gun room / safe and expand the collection.

"Lots of eye relief", being a relative statement, is hard for me to dis/agree with.

To be absolute, a TA31F has 1.5" of eye relief.

Agreed that it's usable, but dependent on your preferred stance whether it's comfortable.

A squared-off (non-bladed) stance doesn't lend itself to "pull(ing) your head back".

Traditional bladed stance (with firing shoulder rearward of other) definitely negates the eye-relief issue.

Just an observation based on my (limited) personal experience, like I said, YMMV ;).

(FTR - I love ACOGs also, just not my favorite unit for the SAN)

Cheers!

I'll be the judge of that... I demand that you send me one to sample. haha.

Love to run a SpecterDR but I have too much money tied up in TAO1's and micro T1's. You get Elcan to send me a Specter and I'll post a video of me shooting a TAO1 and a T1 with it...

I am very much a fan of the Micro T1. To me, it is the epitome of an essential combat optic. Rugged, like the gun that it augments.

Have indeed run the S&B, but found it to be out of place on the smaller guns (Carbine and CQB). Though it would be right at home on a full length gun IMHO.

What mount is that you have your NF in?

Canadianshooter and ghostie, the mount is a Larue Tactical qd 104 mount, works the same for the s&b and is about as low as you can get to clear the rear optic. The elcan is a great optic to but remember everyones eyes are different and adjust differently to the optic. I can't use the 1.5-6 Leupold as my eyes don't adjust to the glass. the S&B is no better for my eyes than the leupold. would not buy the elcan as again my eyes don't adjust to it like they do to the NF. You really have to look through the optics to find out what your eyes adjust to the quickest. there are tonnes of GREAT optics you really have to spend the time finding what works best for you. I like that aimpoint micro as its so low profile and slim but need the FOV the comp M4 gives me, plus prefer the battery life of the comp M4. so many things to consider. I like larue mounts but they don't ship to canada, I forget the name of another company that does that provides mounts as good as larue, so if you go with a 30mm scope there are options available. Spend the time finding what works good for you. No scope does everything well!

Agreed & your response makes sense!

I am surprised more people don't run an Elcan Specter DR on their SAN rifles. For 3-gun matches it as absolutely sublime. You can't beat being able to switch from 1x to 4x with a simple flip of a lever, while you are on the move.

Elcan is a heck of an optic for the SAN, May be the 6 MOA dot that limits its use in real CQB situations. For me the glass isn't as perfect as i like it to be. May be the eyes.

If I was using this rifle for urban combat the best (one and only ) sight would be the new SpecterDR 1.5/6x dual role sight by ELCAN. If my life did NOT depend on it, any other sight would be acceptable. I must advise however that I work for ELCAN and have significant personal experience with this sight. It provides a 1x CQB ( both eyes open) capability with a 16 degree wide field of view . It then switches instantly and precisely to 6 degrees at 6X with the flick of a lever; no change in eye relief, exit pupil or cheekweld. The optics are crisp and unsurpassed in resolution or brightness. The ACOG is not as bright or as fast for target acquistion. This sight will soon be available to commerical customers in 2010. Price TBD. It will do everything an Aimpoint AND Trijicon ACOG will do, all in one sight. Anyone that buys the best AR rifle like Swiss arms will appreciate owning the best sight for it.

If you work at Elcan how about cooking up a group buy for your fellow Canadiangunnutz?
You said 1.5x and then 1x, which is it?

I've had a love/hate relationship with the swiss rifles, primarily relating to wanting to try to put optics on the standard version and finding they sit too high, requiring that mega-lame cheek piece. I have tried the setup shown above by sprint and find it to be very good, however where I'm at right now is to put optics only on the flattop models and shoot the standard rifles the way they were designed - with their iron sights.

My preference in the optics world are for either low power fixed or low power variables. The two shown above are a Leupold FXII 4x33mm and a Leupold VXII 1-4x20mm. I'll shortly be sending my VXII down to Korth to have them install externally adjustable CDS turrets...:)

For those interested, the flattop classic green is a franken gun - it started out life as a classic green carbine with a restricted 17.9 inch barrel and a mid-length gas system - as soon as I got it I pulled all that off and re-fitted her with standard length hardware to make her non-restricted.

So - my vote is for those considering one of these rifles and wanting to run optics, put your money into a flattop model. For those who love the look of the original swiss....lean to shoot her the way she was designed - with her irons!

Cheers,

Brobee
