I have rifles with both options but always felt more comfortable knowing that I could verify that my rifle was on safe when I tried to lift the bolt handle and it wouldn'y budge. It is something that I have gotten used to and many a time sitting in a stand my hand would wonder over to the bolt handle and try to gently lift, it is a habit perhaps but a reassuring one since I don't have to take my concertration off my hunting and at the same time I know the gun is safe

I voted 'I couldn't care less' but voted too quickly. I should have voted bolt handle unlocked with safety on. With the bolt handle locked with safety on you have to take the safety off to unload a round from the chamber. With a rifle that you could manipulate the bolt while the safety is still on to unload would make it less likely to have an ND while unloading.

i said coulnt care less as I generally carry it with an empty chamber. in my rifle the safety has to be taken off to open the bolt to chamber a round... kind of a pain. So, empty with safety off cause Im not going to chamber a round and make it "dangerous" unless i have a target to shoot at, such as a deer.

same here, I don't use the safety, the rifle is loaded when I'm ready to shoot.

You can just as easily slide your finger over to the safety to verify that it is on.

Yes I guess you could do that. But I have too many rifles and they don't all work the same, for instance my CZ safety is on when it is in the forward position:eek:, Enfield P14/17, Remington 30's etc are similar in operation, it just gets confusing unless you are using similar rifle/trigger arrangements.

I don't want to come off as sounding rude, not my intention, but I do not understand this attitude. If this is how you are comfortable, then by all means continue.

But, a firearm is a tool, and one should know how to use it safely. The only time my rifle is unloaded while hunting is if I am going to leave it, i.e. lean it against a tree or fence, or hand it to someone else. Since I was 10 I have been packing a firearm of some sort while hunting. At first, I too walked around with an empty gun, until may dad thought I was aware enough to carry loaded; I believe I was 14. And even before that, I was to load the gun whenever my dad left me alone (when he hiked somewhere without me or sent me to find a grouse on the road back to camp while he watched from a vantage point for a deer/moose/?).

When walking around muzzle control is paramount. But what if I fall you may ask, well, muzzle control is paramount!

I remember reading about a grizzly attack in eastern BC (IIRC), where a couple guys were goat hunting and shot an elk on their way down the mountain. They found at least one of their guns, bolt closed, empty chamber, oh and a few small pieces of their bodies scattered around; safety first!

Now I know there are not grizzly bears everywhere, but my cousin has been charged by a deer and a cougar (I know.... "he's coming right for us!!!!) and I myself have almost shot a blacktail in self defense during the rut. I have also had a couple of run-in's with black bears. Your rifle / shotgun is as much a defensive tool while wandering the woods as it is a hunting tool, and it is much less effective if you are walking around "safe".

I remember going hunting with 2 friends, one from Canada, and one a transplant from England. We left the truck and walked 3 km in the dark to a fork in the road. There we decided to split up to cover the ground more effectively. At that point my Canadian buddy unshoulders his rifle and chambers a round. My English friend, shocked, shakes his head and says: "only a Canadian would walk around with an unloaded rifle."

I would have to agree.

Your English friend true to form, rude; alot of Canadian's died for his exsistance. Awise man shares wisdom not criticism

Carrying a slung rifle while moving through heavy snow covered brush only to find the bolt open and the action full of snow kind of ruins your day.
I'll take safety on ,bolt locked Thanks.

Same here!!!I will chamber a round when I see something I want to shoot!

OK Guys, I can see how hunting in large open areas can afford you the time (sometimes) to load aim and fire a shot without having to worry about the gun being on safe, making noise or moving around to get ammo, weather the bolt handle is locked or ulocked makes no difference but shurely when you are hunting and expecting to see game why would you not want the gun loaded and on safe, arent you taking the chance of wounding the animal by not being prepared to take the shot? I don't get it !
When I get out of the vehicle and I uncase my gun ......I am hunting and the ammo goes from my ammo carrier into the gun where it belongs.
The only guys I know that hunt with the guns unloaded are guys hunting out of a truck or riding an ATV, aside from that why not load your guns when hunting ?

Oh yes, been there done that, it's a real piss off not to mention that you lost your round that was in the chamber
That's why I prefer a locked bolt handle when the safety is engaged.

Yup. Safety on and bolt locked. Empty chamber while hunting? Not on my life! I guess those wide open spaces can allow you this priveledge, but not in my neck of the woods where shots can be close and fast. I can't imagine sitting on stand and here comes a big buck up at 40-50 yards undisturbed... now lets go and work the bolt to chamber a round?!! There goes the buck bounding off through the trees and brush!!! Bye Bye buck!

I will unchamber my rifle in treacherous steep, slippery and or rocky terrain where falling is a concern. Also, at time when walking single file with two or more on a long walk to our destination. Only the front hunter walks chambered and with safety on.

I always carry loaded when hunting as it makes too much noise to chamber a round after you see game. As far as what safety? I don't care. I have one of each and I have no reason to like or dislike either one more than the other as i've never had any problems with them.

I agree, except I don't particularly care whether it has a bolt lock or not.
I dump my shells out the bottom so un-safetying to remove the last round is not a big deal with the barrel pointed at the ground.

The other thing I tend to do is when sitting on a watch I check to make sure safety is off, then I leave my bolt open about 1/4 to 1/2 way so I can see the shell waiting to slip into the chamber. Sounds stupid but it's the way I deal with diff safety positions on various diff guns.

I don't rely on it period watching where the gun is pointed is better. As my firearms trainer said to me if your muzzle is pointed in the right direction while hunting/moving the worst that can happen is a load noise, a hole in a tree and some embarrassment. Relying on a safety is a bad idea once a gun goes off there's no changing what happens.
