...the picture in the Toronto Sun today of the Rio cop with the Madsen LMG?

The basic design of this arm dates back to 1902 and was in production for 50 odd years. Still going strong. Must make one hell of a CQB weapon ;)

To paraphrase Robert Heinlein, no weapon is obsolete as long as some one wants to use it.

www.youtube.com and request in "war in rio", gives the best closeup for the use of the Madsen M.G. in resent action in Rio de Janiero's slums.

Several other clips from the same civil war battles in Rio also show up for viewing.

"War in Rio 2" shows a policeman on the steps returning fire with a Madsen.

War is right - the narco gangs shot down a police chopper the other day.

not from the article, but nice to look at...

Tourist are often targeted by crooks/bandits in and around Rio, who affectionately are called "fillet mignon" by the crooks :)

The Brazilian Government will have to do a mayor "in house cleaning" in Rio before the Olympics in 2016. Which means more works for the Madsen M.G. ?

The problems in Rio's slums are related to socio/economics of Brazil, in which 1/3 of Brazil's population earn less than $ 100.- a months.

I have been in Brazil many times, and love the country, and wish the best for Brazil's future.

AFAIK, the last Madsen in regular service was the Danish M1950 in .30-06. In the '60s, you could buy one directly from Madsen, refurbished, with extra magazines, spares and accessories for US$75. I know of at least one that found its way to Canada.

Truly a very bad situation. A burgeoning industrial powerhouse blithely ignoring the misery of a third of the population.

50 years ago the despair and anger would have been funnelled into a Bolshevik revolution. Today narcotics have replaced politics. A revolution that will truly eat its children.

The "Favelas", the step hillside slums, where the poor were allowed to build homes, without any permits or inspections, because the rich needed their services, has by the latest brazilian president, Lula de Silva, made legal to own and sell like any other real estate.

Often, these poor people resorts to sell drugs to the rich brazilians, as well as resorts to kidnapping, in order to improve their poor status. Currupt police officers often supply weapons to these bandits.

All illustrated vividly in a recent Brasilian movie called "Tropa de Elite", about the BOPE. Recommended viewing.

Those police are good soldiers. From the little seen, they showed good fire discipline. Logisitics will be difficult with those different cals. being used. There's an ammo shortage you know. I wonder what else is being used elsewhere in Rio Campaign.

Brazil produces a lot of firearms and ammunition of all types. I doubt they have few if any supply problems. They've had several changes as far as issue standard goes. The few I know of are 7.65mm, 7x57(most famous) 30-06, 7.62Nato and 5.56mmNato. All of their weapons have been produced internally since the late fourties.
