Ok, now I know that a lot of you are going to side with the VZ58 as its newer, performs well, but so does the SKS. My questions is very general, and I want to know what the real advantages of the 858 are. Its something like 3-5x the price (depending on what you get)

The main advantage I see is that the 858 is lighter, and may be a little more accurate, but wanted to hear your thoughts on the subject.

Also, do any of you reload 7.62x39 ammo? Any pointers there?

Thanks in advance

In my opinion the best bang for your buck is the SKS. Again in my opinion the VZ58 is way over priced for what you get. Check out a few links and you decide.

VZ/CZ platform wins hands down in the ergonomics category - especially with all the extra Fab Defence do dads. SKS is like a 2X4 with a trigger. SKS will cost a fraction of the VZ and will be just as reliable, etc. Six of one and half dozen of the other.

Buy both ! As easy as that ... I bought the sks first then the Cz .. I shoot the Cz more often , waiting on more parts to bubba the sks .. I like them both !

I have 2 x SKS and 1 x CZ858. I don't spend any money to bubba the SKS but do on the CZ. I let me 13 year old shoot the SKS and don't worry much about scratches, (mis) treatment etc. Much cheaper to bubba the CZ and shooting too than my M14 for example.

Can anyone speak to reloading 7.62x39?

For better hunting accuracy and better bullet terminal ballistics? Sure, go ahead and reload. But you can get commercial new-manufactured ammo for this.

For plinking, range and 200 - 300 meter gong shooting, surplus ammo should do the trick, way cheaper and without the time and expense of reloading/equipment.

Thanks for the replies so far guys/gals.

I can. You really have to love reloading to reload for the 7.62x39. The components will cost as much chec surplus.

I actually like reloading and the sks and the 858 are great guns to experiment cast boolits for. The gas port is large reliable and accessible for cleaning.

Where do you find cheap .311 bullets. I found some from a fellow CGNer but not near enough for the SKS and 858. Enough for now using the Lee Enfeilds.

I comes with 4 sometimes 5 detachable 30/5 round mags. No dicking around with stripper clips.

What do you mean "dicking around with stripper clips"? Loading 5 rounds via stripper clip is faster than unloading and then loading with a fresh mag. I could see your point if it was a full capacity mag, but it isn't.

The use of stripper clips requires a higher amount of fine motor skill. When your in a big hurry those skills go right out the window. You can't reload your sks while keeping a round down the pipe.

CZ is easier to accessorize and clean, and available in many configurations, SKS is inexpensive and tough.

Detachable magazine is nice for hunting (CZ or SKS-D), where you might have to unload to cross a road etc., bayonet is great for sticking in a stump if you need two hands for something else...

I have both and here are my impressions:

1. The SKS is heavier and less ergonomic
2. The CZ 858 is lighter, but feels more flimsy
3. Sights are about the same
4. The CZ 858 is easier to reload from its detachable magazines

The SKS is a good tough little carbine, but the CZ 858 is an excellent bush rifle due to its lighter weight.
