Reloading for the .43 Mauser?

OAL would be a great help. I copied the length from what appears to be a factory loaded .43 mauser round in my collection. Loaded a few rounds last night with 55 grs of Goex FFG. Using an empty .22LR shell I added 3 scoops of cornmeal and seated the 370 grain bullet on top of that. Now to see if if she shoots.....

2.376" = trim-to length
3.071" = max OAL

This is according to what I can see... Anyway, there's so little freakin info on that caliber on the net, it's not even funny. I got my measurements off this pic on "Google Images", lol! (I can barely read it) :D

Can anyone confirm this? Thanks...

P.S.
Too freaking bad that Lee doesn't have .PDFs of the info charts that come with their die sets. Are they afraid someone might start selling them for profit or something? :mad:

Max OAL is not a safety issue, and is specific to the gun you're shooting. It will depend on:

- the bullet you use;
- your gun's throat length; and
- magazine limitations.

In a M71 single shot there is no mag, but in a M71/84, which is the gun from which most guys shoot 43 Mauser, it will be the length of the magazine "elevator". That's where the 3.071" probably comes from.

Perfect, thanks for clearing that up. Still, a trim to length confirmation would be very appreciated if someone has it. Thanks!

I put 6 rounds through it last night. Shot very well although the sights leave a little to be desired. The only problem I had was the GF when she got home to the whole house smelling like sulfur from the BP fouling.... LOL.

That's why I'd never use BP in my original antiques... repros ok, but not antiques. The fouling & tough clean up, plus the added pitting of BP are not my ideas of preserving an old gun... there's a reason why BP was dropped altogether at the turn of the last century. Soft smokeless powders and careful loads are much better, even if the gun was designed for BP.

Caution is key.

I agree - except...... once in a while, nothing beats stoking up your old shooter grade with fire and brimstone to the delight of you and all around. :D
