17 HMR for Prarie Dogs?

It seems like they have it at about $0.50 a round which is pretty standard. Its not so much a sale as much as a bulk buy.

Marstar has .223 listed cheaper, but not in stock, so I think it'd be worth looking around to see what you can find.

You can make precision rounds for cheaper.

My precision loads cost less than $0.30 each (assuming free brass).
 
I have two 223's, 204 and 22Hornet, all work great but the 204 is my goto rifle. Here's an example of gopher devestation from the 204

This spring I bought a case of 223 ammo for my Weatherby CFP from Russells in Calgary. It was Winchester bulk with 40 rounds per box with 45 gr hollow points. It was right around $26 per box of 40 last spring. Great ammo and priced right. Then you will have all the brass you need for loading later!

I just saw on EE that Imknadian (sp?) has a Rem SPS in 204 for sale. That could be your rig!

Not impossible, but pretty darn close.

As I understand it, what we call a gopher on the prairies in Canada is the Richardson Ground squirrel and it looks like this.

A prairie dog is about twice as big and looks like a mini groundhog. It's about twice as big as a "gopher".

Wow thanks for the info , I never knew there was a difference , that is really cool , do we have prairie dogs in Alberta? I have only ever seen gophers!
 
So I have enough $$$ to call up Frontier and order the rifle I have my eye on. (none of those guys on the EE were interested in a trade) and I have had a few duds over the years, buying used, (more lately) so I figgure I'll buy new. I gave him the measurements for my scope so he can ship the rings and bases with the rifle.

I also had enough left over to get 500rnds of .223, it's only $28 for shipping so I figgured what the heck......

All in all not to bad $1,270(ish) for the rifle, rings and bases, 500 rnds & Shipping.

Wow. $1,200 for shooting rodents?

Five pages of discussion it's kind of late but I have a .17hmr savage that rips and tears hares, jackrabbits, cottontails, red squirrels, gray squirrels, coons, foxes, and pretty much anything else I put the crosshairs on within 175 yards. I've tried about six different types of ammo and the CCI 20gr Hollow points definitely do the most damage. For accuracy though, the Hornandy Vmax or the Winchesters are the most consistent.

Anyways, I know it's late to charm in. Good luck with the new gun!

I already have a .17 HMR, and I find it good out to 175-200 as well. But I was told to expect distances of up to 400+...... I need something that will hit out to those ranges..... and I I get to see the "show" so much the better! :D

From what I hear I should plan on taking out 2 or maybe 3 rifles..... Just due to the volume of shooting!

I was thinking about my .17 for "close in stuff" maybe my .243 (which I already have a good coyote load for) for the down times while my .223 is cooling.

350 to 400 is quite a distance while shooting at 3" wide by 9" tall targets!

I still think I need a good scope! I don't think my 4.5-14 is going to be enough! I gonna try it out first, just to see!

I have a Meuller APV 4.5-14x45 I was going to try first.

I hope it's up to the task, cause the rest of my stuff doesn't seem to be moving :(

I tried to price everything for quick sale, it worked for the most part. I already sold my G-22, extra M-213, extra Dillon SDB and some other odds and ends I had laying around.

I hope I can find buyers for My old shotty, Muzzle loader, Buckmark and Colt Gold Cup. If I sell everything else I may not have to sell the CGC (fingers crossed).

You have a good dog rifle there. Get some dies and work up a load...then spend some long cold winter nights loading at least 500 rounds...I generally fire about 250 rounds/day. Make sure you have your paperwork in order regarding temporary import of firearms into the US...that is if your planning to hunt state side. Form is called Form 6NIA. Can be downloded off the net. Application is free, guns must be legally registered in Canada and you as the applicant must have a clear crimminal record and all that jazz.
 
17HMR for Gophers

I use a bipod on my 17 HMR Savage which has the heavy barrel and custom trigger (pre Accutrigger). It shoots like a dream with the right ammo.
 
I just got back from the Range, it was a good day ish....

Good day cause I was at the range, but conditions were not the best. Wind from R to L at 20 to 35KM/h

Total I fired off 100 rnds, from 25 to 200 yrds. Most people don't belive in seasoning the barrel, but I always do..... It makes me feel better... :)

So after doing my shoot & clean routine I started sighting her in. I starrted at the 25yrd target, I had to do some fiddling with the mounts.... Turns out the rear holes are no tdrilled exactly in the centre of the reciever..... I had read some reviews about this on the net, so I wasn't too surprised. Right on at 25 put me 6" low at 100. and right on at 100 put me 6" low at 200...... go figgure.

I was looking through my Nosler manual and saw that 25.5gr of Benchmark behind a 50gr Nosler BT was the "most accurate load tested" so I made up 8rnds of that before hitting the range.

All in all I am not too dissapointed with my groups of American Eagle 55gr FMJ ammo but I did get some pretty big flucuations in Velocity with it. as measured it went from 2814 to 2992 fps.

I am also sure I can do better than the groups I shot with the Noslers I had made up. Now I have enough brass to do a full Ladder test to tune the load. The nosler came measured 3075 to 3140 on the crony.

The pics below are all from the 100y target. The groups are over 4" at 200, on account of the wind I am sure, I'll have to shoot some more on a calm day to be sure.

Not bad for a new barrel and untested hand loads... and inexpensive AE 55FMJ's wont group very well in a varmint rifle...more suited for autos such as mini 14's and such. Also cross wind at 20-30 kmh will not give very consistant groups IMO.

Try working up a load with Hornady 40 grain VMax stuff. They shoot very well and are readily available at most outlets.
 
Not bad at all.

As for the scope.... 15 power is more than enough. I use a Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x and it's great so the 15x should be fine.

Take along the 17 as well. What I normally do is shoot my .243 until it gets warm to the touch and then switch to my target .22. When the gophers stop popping up, I go back to the .243 for the long shots... and keep the cycle going... although you'll be able to shoot that .223 a bit longer than I can with my .243.

With the good start you had at the range the other day... you'll be fine by the time your trip comes around.

Very nice ;). How do you like your .22 Hornet for gophers? I think one is in my near future ( I have been saying this for years though :D)
