Hi guys,

WELL, I am a true novice.

The SKS is my second gun I have ever owned (first is a Supernova 12 gauge).

I have two Russian SKSes. I would like to keep one stock, but on the other one I would like to install a scope and possibly synthetic stock.

But first scope/mount. I want a quality mount. I have no problem drilling and tapping things. I don't want junky mounts that will go loose.

So far two mounts seem popular from searching.

The Choate from sksman. Seems like a popular rear mount scope.

Then there is the scout scopes.com one, mounts up front. Both seem sturdy.

I dont know what mount would work well and what type of scope for each. What I want is a maximum effective range scope but not one that is too good for the gun. I would like accuracy at an effective range.
I would like to use it for target shooting and possibly some hunting.

Please help!

Thanks.

SKS Scopes

I've been there and done it, tried a lot of stuff finding out what worked and what didn't, and what you're looking for is a Russian style POSP scope. Checkout eastwave.ca, you only need to drill and tap the left side of the receiver with 3 screws and a small plate attaches on. After that you slide on the scope mount zero it and take it back off, it's unreal how well it'll keep its zero. Leave it off for 6 months kicking around in the back of a truck or in your rucksack and the second you clip it back on ( all of 3 sec job ) its bang on where you had it last time around. The downside is cost, the upside is that when you take it off it's like there was never a scope on it period.

Not to mention that you can build a mini Dragunov for not much money.

I just sold my rig to get into CAS but I know a couple ppl out here on the west coast. Drop me a line if you decide to go this route.

on mine I have a really nice all metal Norinco receiver cover/scope mount that replaces your stock receiver, I just sold my last one here or it would have been yours. Try and find one of those as they are strong and cheap, we got a few of a guy or I would point you in a direction to them.

Cheers,
Evan

The side mounts are the only setup that will hold zero. Top cover mounts are NFG.

Keep in mind that most scopes will interfere with stripper clip loading.

IF you ever make it out to poco I let you try it out and you tell me. I can go 5 for 5 at the gong @ 200 meter's then take it off and put it right back on and do the same thing over & over & over again. But wait I forgot that I was a computer commando so I never seen a range before.
Come to poco and put your money were your mouth is.
Oh ya besides all the range officer's there that can vouch for it ask smartbomb he did it too cuz he didn't belive his own eye's tell he tried it for himself.
As a side note the nuts & locking screw's must be tighten down to achive repeatability.

Choate all the way... i had that cover mount and I got tired of fudging around with it

Satain that is cool to know you are having good luck with it.... I sure didn't... The srews came losse after 2 40 round mags fired ... :-(

So my vote is Choate...
