Intro to Swiss Arms?

Hey all,

I've spent the better part of 2 hours searching past threads and google, and I unfortunately haven't found any great references.

I really like the look of the swiss arms rifles, and would only purchase a non-restricted, but would like some more info.

- What is the difference between the "classic green" and the "special black", and what other models are available to us Canadians?

- Any must have upgrades?

- Any other tips / advice on purchasing?

The Classic Green and the Black Special are the same rifle in every respect, except for the colour. One is black and one is green :D. Here's the variants I know of that are actually available in Canada:

1) Classic Green (full size rifle)
2) Black Special (full size rifle)
3) Black Special Target (full size rifle, with integrated rail, and flip-up sight)
4) Blue Star (full size rifle)
5) Classic Green 14.3 inch carbine
6) Classic Green 17.9 inch carbine
7) Classic Green 17.9 inch carbine "Target" (with integrated rail and flip-up sight)
8) Classic Green CQB
9) SG 550-1 Sniper

The full size Classic Greens and Black Specials are the most easily obtainable. CQBs are also fairly easy to find, and carbines seem to enter the country in dribs and drabs but they are available too. The SG 550-1 Sniper is very difficult to obtain as there are only a handful in the country and no more on the way. The flat-top 17.9 inch carbines are likewise very difficult to find, as only a small production run was imported.

The must have upgrades depend on what model you are talking about. There are rail systems, cheek risers, and stocks for all the models.

There are actually quite a few threads. If you search for "swiss" in all titles in the black and green rifle forum over the past several years, you will find lots of info.

Any differences (other than colour) between the black / green / blue / red?

Are all unrestricted?

Any pros/cons of any of the models (other than price)

That sniper looks sweet - wish I could find one of those.

thanks mrsmitty - darn, those Carbines look amazing..... 0.6" too short :-(

I read somewhere that you can shoot regular .223 in a 5.56 - is this true? Would it hurt the rifle? I have a 700P in .223 and was just curious if I can use the same ammo I've got in bulk. Thx.

Yep its generally fine to shoot .223 in a rifle chambered for Military 5.56.

You MAY however find that some .223 is underpowered, and wont cycle quite as well as full power ammo, my friend says his Black Special likes full power military spec. ammo.
