Capabilities of a 30-30

surprising how many flinches have developed with the "need" for big bore rifles. Then they dont want to shoot it because they hurt too much.
Find a resonable rifle you are good with and shoot it lots. then you will use it well because you know what it will and will not do.

Great pic John!
How long did it take to get him up in the tree?
He climbed up there, then I shot him. :D

At the time, we had an army truck with a heavy gear driven winch. Pulled the moose up there with ease.

We now use ATV's, however we still hang our moose.
We've hung a piece of 4" heavy wall pipe high between two trees and with the help of a simple pulley, and some heavy rope, an atv with a few guys on the back of it can pull up an average moose. Bigger moose take two atv's.

I have posted about this before, but a few years ago a fellow up here, from Watson Lake, whacked a huge 75" bull moose with factory 170 gr Silvertips. Two shots and the freezer was full!

Why not invest a small amount of $ on a 4-to-1 pulley, and a couple guys can haul up your moose. If it's a big one, a single ATV can do it easily.

I read a lot about the 30-30 being able to reach out as far as 200 yards with hand loaded rounds. What if your not set up for loading 30-30, what factory rounds would be recommended for moose, bear and deer? I buy most of my 30-30 stuff from Crappy Tire and there is only three options there. Winchester 150 PSP, 170 PSP and 170 Silvertips.

In 30-30 & 308, (on harvested deer) I've had very good sucess with any weight, of the old style of Silvertip. I either case, often the front lead portion has expanded. The only substantial portion left intact, is the copper jacket just under the hide on the opposite side of the entry wound.
But that's my experience only.

I don't why they would write as far as 200 yards. I wouldn't want to get hit by one even 400 yards away! Got some loading programs for the computer. what I like most about one program, put in what your using and it will give you the point blank range and how high to sight in at 100 yards to obtain that. Someone else did the work for me. Found it to be very accurate. anyways...

factory Winchester load, 170gr, 6" point blank (good for deer), your looking at 206 yards.

My opinion now, with the amount of force being excerted (don't remember the ft/lbs. off hand but way over 900), I would say your good to 200 yards for moose or bear with a 30-30 170gr bullet. Just make sure you hit him in the lungs though because that bullet is not going to go through the bone on a moose.

forgot to mention, if you look on the back of your ammo box it lists it as a cxp2 bullet and they recomend cxp3 for moose and so on. So technically it is not recomended for that size of ammo. Personally if it was me, I would use it until I got something A little bigger. but thats just me.

I agree I have seen a deer drop like rock with 320 yard shot using a single 30/30 Hornady leverevolution round. The impact trauma was clearly devestating.

one shot. WMU 29. About 100 yards.

And yes, they are hanging in the living room, right over the sofa.
(the wife didnt want them there but it was the only wall in the house that I could hang them on and it would not interfere with walking by them)

To all you guys out there that shoot those big ol' macho super duper hyperdootinatin' bang sticks with the term "magnum" attached to the end of the description, you all suffer from the infamous , lifelong affliction known as " peenuss envy ! ! ! ! ! HahHAhaHAHahahAaaaaaa....... HA! !

I have a 30-30 or two around.
Doesn't mean I use these exclusively.

Tomorrow I hunt with a 458 X 2 inch American in a bolt action rifle. (Strong 45-70 energy level)
I am not going to shoot any further than I would with my 30-30 so.....I'll just have to get closer.
Matter of fact I have more of a trajectory to contend with.

If it wasn't for a few last minute, unforeseen surprizes, I would be using my compound bow.

I would have to agree with the 170 grainers - especially the power points and silver tips. Leverevolution 160's look interesting though. Don't know if those pointed boat tails would penetrate as well as as good 170 grainer though. The Speer 170 grain hotcor is one tough bullet that penetrates especially well even in the largest game.

I used to be the "sporting goods guy" at our local Woolco when it was still open. I brought in and sold more Win 94's in 30-30 than all other centerfires combined. I also sold more 30-30 ammunition than all other centerfire ammo combined. And this was in the Yukon, so nobody was hunting deer with them; these were primarily moose hunters. And to be honest, it was the 150 gr ammo that 90% of the hunters bought because it was cheaper and cheap was what people wanted. I've never owned a 30-30 myself, but I know for a fact this cartridge has killed countless big game animals, including moose and grizzly, in the hands of all sorts of people under all sorts of conditions, most of them using the cheapest ammo they could find.
