Coyote Guns - What's in your pocket?

I have no pictures either, and I agree with Kevan they aren't as bad as one would think. Other than a few gophers that is the first thing other than paper I have shot with it. I don't know how explosive the Scenars would be on larger game. The two coyotes I shot were shot in the chest and exited through the side leaving large exit wounds and you could definitely see fur fly!! I shoot 155 Scenars in my .308 and have also shot a few with it and they don't leave a big mess but do seem to open up a bit. I am not a big game hunter but my Step son does a fair bit and has decided to load up a few 155 Scenars for his .300 Win mag and his .300 Ultra mag to see how they work. I will let you guys know the results.

Coyote Guns

Customized Mini-14
Gaillard 20" .750 Stainless Barrel, ASI Target Stock and Gas System, Bushnell 10X Tactical Mil-Dot Scope held up on a Bipod. Kills to 360 yds to date with confidence to 600 yds. Shooting 69 gr Siera MatchKings, Varget, Fed 205 Primers and IVI cases

a SPS rem v in 243 is working out well. It will do duty with my Ruger 77 243. When calling I like a 223 or hornet. I find that the 243 works better than most var. cal at the 350+ range. As long as you are hitting them & killing them, you have the right gun.:) Keep shooting as we have a huge population of young ones here this year. AJ

N.E.F. Handi-Rifle Superlight in .223Remington fitted with an old Weaver K4-1, and a Savage 24F, also .223Remington w/ 12ga., fitted with an old Weaver K2.5. With both these guns it has been demonstrated that the principal limitation to their performance is me. I don't have realistic expectations of changing that so much that the cost of better guns could be justified.

trombone now that is what I am talking about! How do you like the .17? I have heard a lot of mixed stuff about them. I had a .17 Rem and it was loud - I never took a coyote with it though.

The 17 FB as a calling rifle is by far my favorite rifle for the those 200 yard and under shots;) I have shot coyotes out over 300 yards with it but I prefer to keep the shots less than that:)

WOW Trombone very nice rigs/cartridge choices and a hearty welcome to CGNTZ.

I'm very interested in a 17 FB barrel for my T/C Contender carbine to use as my bobcat/lynx calling gun what kind of damage does it do on coyotes up close or does it even exit on shots 100 yards and closer.

I am basically looking for something that will not do unnesassary damage to the pelt and even better would be if the bullet does not exit.

I already have a 17HMR and a 223 that I can use but I want something in between these rounds basically I'm thinking the 17HMR isn't quite enough (and yes I know it will work if I'm carefull) and the 223 is too much.

I've shot a fair number of coyotes with the 17 fireball over the last couple winters and exit holes are basically non existent. A .17" entrance hole is usually the only fur damage. Most of my shots have been under a 100 yards with the closest @ 20 yards. Shot a couple fox also and no fur damage. A good quality 25 gr. bullet like a Berger HP Varmint match is a must for coyote size game. I tried 30 grain HP's also and with the 1-9 twist they shot incredibly well but I couldn't get the velocity that I hoped. With a healthy (safe) charge of H4198 I am achieving 3843fps (ave.) velocity from the 25's.

Old style Remington 700 BDL, Leupold VXIII 3.5-10x40, HS precision Mag conversion with 10 shot mags. 40.6 h380, 55 vmax 22-250.

Also my British Columbian Sabertooth Mountain Ground Squirrel rifle:)

just a old rem 700in .222rem 24" barrel with most of the bluing gone and a old weaver 4x marksman scope with the fine cross hair, i think i will paint it some day.

Tikka T3 in .204 Ruger topped with a Leupold VXII 6-18x40. For calling coyotes most shots are well under 200 yards. I have used a .22-250 but found it to be too devastating, I guess that only matters if your keeping the furs to sell... Second choice would be a .223
