I was HUNTED by a wolf tonight. Updated.

Just a thought.
Are you going back there to hunt? I'm wondering if you plug a deer just before dark and have to dress it on the spot if your new buddy will be waiting to steal it with his family.

Seems he thinks that's HIS restaurant in those fields.

I was hunted by a cougar once. It was dark, and quite late. I had been scanning the area for my prey for about an hour, when I heard a noise directly behind me. I was startled, but tried to casually turn, but before I could she was already onto me! I escaped by buying her a drink, and ditching her when she was in the bathroom. Close.

Super duper.

Man I wish I was lucky enough to be hunted by a wolf... I'd put one right between his ribs!

I spent most of last winter trying to call and get a wolf and I know they are around but no luck! And here you are being followed by them...too bad no shot, maybe next time keep an eye out for it when your out deer hunting. GREAT STORY.

that would be some freaky!! I usally walk to my stand an hour before sun rise. ALONE! so creepy. My hunting buddy doesnt know how I do it.

Good story for the grandchildren. If I were in your shoes I'd be packing some bear bangers and bear spray at the very least. I've heard other stories where a lone wolf trailed a person for a long time and never attacked. If a few more wolves were to join it along the way I think it'd be a little different story though.

I know what you mean by that gutteral growl. We had a half dozen wolves running around our meadow howling at the moon one winter night. The only thing that puts more chills up my spine than that growl is hearing a cougar scream at night. The first time I heard it I was concentrating on a chess game by the light of a kerosene lamp with my back to the sliding glass door. I just about went though the ceiling when that flippin' cat screamed behind me. Found the tracks the next day.

Last weekend I came across some fresh(< 1hr old) wolf scat about a kilometer from where I'd just been calling moose . He woulda' got lead poisoning if he stuck his nose out of the fog. No wonder there's no deer around...

LOL!!! Too Funny.

I was out with my muzzleloader yesterday and stopped walking to take a leak. As I was watering a little shrub I heard what I would think was at least 4 or 5 wolves break out in howl at the same time. That wizz was cut short right then and there. Fly was up and gun in hand. It was probably 10am. I have never heard this before. All of them started at once and they didn't let up for a good 15 minutes. Only having my muzzleloader on me and a very sharp knife I didn't really feel like confronting them. Judging by the volume I would say they were about 300-400m away from me.

From what I hear the wolf population has been increasing around that area by a lot. Might have to do with good whitetail numbers.

I'm hearing it now (the howling -- window's open). Ever notice how wolves get scarier and more viscious the farther east you live? I imagine a wolf on PEI probably selectively hunts and kills only newborn infants snatched directly from maternity wards.;)

Out here you just shoot them like any other wild dog. There's no mystery or lore or Little Red Riding Hood stories. They're PITA pests and are treated accordingly.

I don't think I'm a good enough shot to take out 5 dogs in one shot. It's not that I was scared for my life. I just didn't particularly feel like making out with one of them.

Thanks for the story, awesome read!!!
Its probably just me being paranoid, but I often wonder when sitting in the bush how aggressive wolves or yotes will get. Last deer season was the first we've seen more yotes than deer in WMU 63A. I was standing in the bush one night getting ready to start the walk back, and I didnt even hear the little bastard till he was within 30 yards. He was running right towards me, then took a turn at the last minute and was gone. Not a huge fan anyways... :D

Amazing story!!! Great detailed account of the encounter too.

This is the first time I have heard of this, but something similar happened to my brother a couple of weeks ago. He hunts down towards Chatham Ont. and he was in a corn field hunting deer with a crossbow. He had a mature male coyote come out in the field beside him. The weird part was that my brother walked into the open field to scare the coyote off. Instead of running the coyote reared up on its hind legs and started barking and yelping as if it wanted to challenge him!!

So my brother made a cell call to Dad and they sent the coyote on his way with the 243, and my brother stayed out for the rest of the hunt. I could tell it shook his nerves just by talking to him. At least in my brother’s case he could get someone to bail him out. You were most certainly in a bad place with no bow, and no means of getting a buddy to come to help you out.

So I can understand your concern as sometimes the circumstances change and you have to defend your self. It just sucks when you only have a bow with a couple of arrows.

Update

So here are the pics I promised. I would have posted them earlier but I was working my butt off all weekend.

The first pic is the pile of Turkey feathers that I mentioned. In the daylight I could see that there was actually one big pile, and 3 smaller piles of feathers where the wolves or coyotes took the bird apart. Not surprisingly there were barely any pieces left, the biggest being a chunk of chewed up leg bone in the centre of the pic, pointed out by the arrow fletching. There isn't any doubt in my mind what happened to this turkey! :p

The second picture is of the only tracks I could find. These aren't really much to look at, I found them on the bank where the wolf jumped across. There's 2 paw-prints side by side. It looks like he slid a little as he was going to jump back across.

The next picture is of the spot where the wolf stopped & stared at me. I put a water-bottle down as a reference, 14 metres according to my range finder (but the "arc" says I should hold for 13! :p). The spot on the bank where he jumped across & where I found the tracks is just to the left, outside of the frame.

And finally I took a picture of the stand from where the wolf was standing. It's too bad that this tree died this year, because this is the most comfortable stand I've set up yet! :(

Unfortunately I had to work all weekend, but hopefully I'll be out there more this week. I'll be sure to keep y'all posted.

Cheers.

wow I've been out by myself and been stalked by wolves at least 3 times. 2 times I've had eyes on them but never got the scope on to them fast enough for a shot. The third time the howls followed me for the better part of 50 minutes and the OP is correct the sound they make is chilling. I've also been stalked by a cougar at least once when I was back tracking I came across the cats tracks in my tracks (over 2 km of my back trail). I still prefer hunting alone as chances are I will not get attacked alone but even with a partner we would still be stalked as 1 of the 2 times I had eyes on the wolves I was with my dad.

that would have freaked me right out. mind you im terrafied of wolves. always have been. think id still be afraid of them carrying a large rifle to.

been up close and hugged a tiger, and lion, even a bear. but i cant get within 30 feet of a wolf without going into a cold sweat.
