Where I live, there is no closed season for wolves or coyotes (below 1100m). You don't even need a tag. I have been told by CO's to shoot every one I see. Too bad the only time I've seen wolves is driving down the Alaska highway at night.
ETA: A friend of mine was welding on a Cat late at night 2 years ago, while the operator slept in the cab. At around 2am, the operator woke up and saw a big mangy wolf putting the sneak on my friend while he was welding! The operator grabbed his 45/70, opened the door of the Cat, and blasted the wolf 25ft away from where my buddy was crouched down with his back turned. The wolf had almost no teeth left, was really skinny, and looked like it had mange. A pretty close call.
