SKS vs VZ58

Owning both pimped-out rifles, I have to say CZ wins hands down for weight, ergonomics, accuracy and especially balance.

The SKS really is an older version of the CZ, having said that, I like the SKS more. I keep my 2 x SKS the way they are and bubba my CZ, everybody is happy.

Of course, keep in mind that a CZ is 3.5 times more than a SKS. That's why I like the SKS even more, bringing more normal, "poor" people to the range. Really, with the cheap ammo, everybody can a afford one.. I love it.

I own both and find the cz much better for just about everything. The short stock length of the sks in annoying and so is the fixed box magazine. Both rifles can be loaded with stripper clips. The cz shoots much, much better. But that being said, you should eventually buy both if you can afford it. It's nice to have variety.

The 858 is lighter, and I find that poping it to my shoulder for quick acquisition of a target is easier sight wise. I have an early chinese SKS and had a Russian and prefer the 858 due to weight, looks, ergonomics are a slight bit better for me and I find it more accurate with irons. Now I am putting small long relief sights on both of them this spring so I will see if that makes a difference.

I comes with 4 sometimes 5 detachable 30/5 round mags. No dicking around with stripper clips.

I found loading a stripper clip is extremely quick, and much quicker than loading rounds individually into say a vz58 magazine.

The SKS loads stripper clips much easier and quicker than the VZ58, with the VZ loading a stripper is tedious.

Point being, if your under fire, have a case of ammo, reloads are extremely quick.

I'd go with the SKS

Cz 858

Pros- fun to shoot, nice accessories (fab four makes some good ones), pistol grip, detachable magazines, lighter than SKS,

Cons- More expensive than SKS, had some shell extraction problems

SKS

Pros- Inexpensive, very tough, very reliable, fun to shoot

Cons- heavy, no removable magazine

Conclusion

Both are fun to shoot and I am a bit biased because I own a CZ. My buddies have SKS's.

bet you can`t just have one.

I do not see them as an either or thing. They are cheap enough to enjoy both especially when compared to other tactical rifle alternatives. I upgraded my 858 to an AR-180B last year:redface: It was more than twice as expensive to buy and shoot, and it did not shoot as accurately an 858.

In my experience extraction issues are the result of a dirty or rusted chamber.
Hit that sh!t with a chamber brush and solvent, should clear that right up.

Even if you clean frequently it's hard to keep lacquer from the steel cases from building up in the chamber.

I'm hoping thats all it is anyways.

Ya I figured that out the hard way, I was using a bore snake instead of the brush that comes with the gun. So the chamber wasn't never got cleaned.

IMO the only real advantage the SKS has is price, and even then it's not like the '58 is particularily expensive anyway. Of course in our market price is usually the most important factor.
