Precision rifle suggestions

Hello everyone.

It's suggestion time, because I'm wishy-washy and can't make a decision. I've got my heart set on a .223 bolt-action precision rifle. I've thought about .308, but I live in relatively hilly terrain, and .223 will suit me just fine I think. I've had plenty of experience with precision shooting (if you can call it that) with rimfire (.22mag and .17hmr), but I want a cartridge that can reach farther than what those rounds can provide.

I plan on punching holes in various inanimate objects with a friend, and taking down the occasionally pesky varmint if the chance arises.

What would be a good, accurate, and relatively inexpensive rifle for a noob to precision shooting? What twist rate would be good for an all around shooter? I plan on starting out with factory ammo, but this will also give me an excuse to finally get into reloading (on the Christmas list this year).

I've looked at Savage and Remington thus far. I plan on going with the tacticool look, as opposed to the classic wood look.

All and all, a thread with suggestions to a slightly overwhelmed FNG. :jerkit:

Well i great gun in teh Accurcy international. but your looking at $6000+. but they are a ###y gun, and shoot great. Most Rem. 700 in a target build do well. but its mainly up to you, your wife and your wallet,

good luck

Look at what Savage has to offer and don't forget Tikka. However if you want tacticool the Remingtons are hard to beat for aftermarket bits.

Sounds like a good varmint rifle would fit the bill nicely.

Good: Savage or Remington
better: Tikka Varminter or Super Varminter
Best: Cooper

I think you can hardly go wrong with Remington, Savage, or Tikka. Tikka if you don't want to do too much after market work, and Remington if you do. Savage if you like the accu-trigger.

If you want "tactical". Frontier has the Savage 10 "Precision Carbine" on clearance. I don't really know anything about them, but it looks awesome. If I had the money, I would probably get one (along with the couple dozen other guns on my list):

I don't know why no one put Savage in the same upgradable class as Remington. Not only does Savage have just as many options as Remington, you can do most of them without a gunsmith.
Anything cool you can do to a Remington, you can do on a Savage.
The Savage will be easier on the wallet too and shoot just as good IMO.

My recommendations are any Savage in 223 with a 1:9 twist barrel. Pick one with the stock you like cause its cheaper to buy it with the stock you like factory than it is to change it later. You can change everything else you want later. Trigger, bolt handle, magazine, barrel, trigger guard. You name it. Make it as cool as you want.
Just google sharpshootersupply.

:agree: 100%

Mysticplayer (Mystic Precision, second row down on the right, in the CGN sponsors) is very big into Savage and can also hook you up with what ever you need.

for less money you may find a CZ bolt that will do what you want it to do. they are underated by a long shot and the price reflects it.

Savage Model 12 Long Range Precision Varminter and rebarrel with a match quality aftermarket barrel - this is after all precision rifle, and factory barrels don't qualify. Shilen makes a drop-in.

If you want seriously long range, the recent match winners are said to be using 7mm bullets. 223 is too sensitive to wind, but that depends on how fanatic/obsessed you are. ;)

Or you can get one of these and its good out of the box IMO
HS stock, det mag, single set trigger, 9" twist, the CZ 527 Kevlar

As mentionned in this thread, there are a variety of factory rifles that would fill the bill. I would suggest that buying on the basis of "tactikewl" appearance is a pretty poor basis for selection.
Get a rifle, put a decent optic on it - the Bushnell 10x40 is a pretty good entry level scope for what you are planning - and get shooting.
You will want to start handloading.
Instead of spending your money on bells and whistles, get out shooting.
Once you have shot out the factory barrel (could take 250 boxes of ammunition, or more), or find that your skill has increased to the point that the factory barrel is a handicap, then its time for a custom barrel.

Thanks everyone for the input. And no, I was not planning on buying by just sheer appearance of the rifle. I've been shooting long enough that I know not to do that. I've already had 2 Savage rifles, and the accu-trigger is a wonderful thing, I just wanted a little more input on how they shoot and such. I've also had a CZ as well, and I know how nice they are.

I already have a Leupold scope lying around, plus rings and a bipod, so that will be all I need once I get the factory rifle. I don't plan on going gung-ho with accessories and such, as I am just getting my feet wet in the whole long range shooting experience.

Bang for the buck, it looks like Savage or CZ are the rifles of choice to a newcomer!

I can see finger prints on your barrel FYI.

How do you expect to kill varmints or shot 1/4 MOA with a finger printer barrel?

That and your shelf is dusty >8-|

Ok, so I've pretty much decided on a Savage now. I love the accutrigger on my Mark II and I've handled a few centerfire Savages before. Now I'm just trying to decide on the model I want to get. I looked at the Precision Carbine, but I'm not sure I like stock on it, or the short(er) barrel.

What opinions do you guys have on the standard 10FP?

The 12Fvss is a sharp shooter as well. I get sub 1/2 moa as my best groups with factory ammo. Longer 26" barrel and a sweet trigger. The factory stock is not the best but for the money its a good rifle. Try the EE as well if you want to save some money!(Some good deals around) I like the shorter barrel on the new precision carbine and have one in 308.
