I'm a guy that loves his SUV. I have a 2001 Ford Escape but I can't take it hunting for big game because... well... what do I do if I get something?

What do you do?

I found this on the internet today and was wondering if anyone uses something similar? If so, what brand and can you share some stories?

Thanks.

PS... ignore the truck and imagine an SUV

Funny, but I was going to start a thread just like this. My old blue nag (1993 GMC 4X4) is on her last legs, and I may end up with a smaller, more efficient 4X4 of some kind, and it may not be a pickup.

Who hunts with a small SUV? Do you just load the game in the back, on the roof, or what?

I've seen those hitch racks on the road, and my observation each time was exactly the same: the stuff on the rack gets FILTHY from road dirt, dust, etc. Add road salt during the late hunting season, and I wouldn't want my game meat anywhere near that.

Why can't an Escape be used for big game? Like...how big IS the game?

I put a 240lb deer on the front rack of my quad....so I can't see how you couldn't use the SUV.

One of my buddies put a deer in the back of his moms Lexus!

I shoved a big doe into my Saab 2.0T last year. Not ideal, though :D.

I have always like the 4runners. Add a nice trailer with canvas cover and voila.

I use the hitch basket on my Jimmy, At one time had two 8 point bucks on it (est. weight 375lb.). They are great no blood no mess.

I don't know about you but I don't want blood in my SUV or on the hood. If you can lift a deer on the roof and put it in the rack I have there... the more power to you.

As for the mud and dirt, I was thinking the same thing but then I thought about putting down a tarp and then wrapping the deer in that. There are some that are angled to come up off the ground a bit more as well.

What about the bad roads thing? I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean it would scrape or hit the road surface?

Thanks for all the comments... please keep them coming.

With a 3/8 plywood scrap on the bottom and tarped up carcass, never had problem with road debris or height of basket.

This is similar to what I do. The other option is get a rubber made SUV trunk liner that that has it's edges turn up and tarp up the animal as well. This way any blood is contained, blood from an animal could really stink up the carpet. I have a pathfinder and i've dump two deer in the back and stacked all my equipement on my game. If the back seat fold down this helps too.

The other option is to quarter everything bag it and throw it in the back.

I would really prefer to keep the game outside for cooling purposes as well. I'm a firm believer in getting the animal as cool as possible and as soon as possible so putting it inside would go against that.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I certainly would quarter the animal (or smaller chunks for a bigger animal) before trying to load it into a roof basket! I'd also have a small stepladder in the vehicle to make the whole operation somewhat easier.

When I was a kid my dad had a Bronco II. Very small. We put many deer in the back, and once a cow elk. Always used a tarp to keep things clean, but the odd drop or smear was inevitable. When I was in university I once fit 2 deer in the trunk of my little car. I had to fold the back seats down, and cut off the legs at the knees to make them fit. I used a bunch of garbage bags to line the inside. There's always a way. I wouldn't hesitate to use one of the hitch racks. I'd just wrap the deer well with a tarp to keep it clean from the gravel and salt and stuff.

Get this....

I just run a little 4'x4' utility trailer behind my jeep when i hunt. Not a ton of room but you can make a few deer fit, and its easy to store.
